There are standard tools, and then there are luxury tools; the ones you might not otherwise buy, but simply can't do without. Or where the problem could be solved by standard tools but you have this special one that makes it soooo much easier and pleasant. An essential special purpose tool. Or a high quality tool that works much better than a standard tool. Or the luxury tool you bought so you no longer have to suffer with standard tools.
Here is my submission, a third hand, just picked it up at Harbor Freight, about $5, been wanting one for many years, sometimes the vice and some jury rig just isn't enough.
Others, pretty standard but am always reaching for them: hemostats, volt meter, folding saw horses (take up almost no space, but in 2 minutes can set up large work area with a sheet of plywood), really high quality box cutter, 18" breaker bar.

I think it may have been Click & Clack, the Car Talk guys who said that one really only needs two items to effect all repairs: WD-40 and duct tape. If it's supposed to move, and doesn't, use WD-40. If it's not supposed to move, and does, use duct tape!

By the way, I have the same tool pictured above. Mine was called a "Helping Hand". A godsend for most soldering projects.

here's one that I can't live without. pulls cable ties to a calibrated tension then cuts the excess clean. great for any and all automotive wiring jobs.
almost as usefult as the Craftsman bottle opener wrench.
