shudder in reverse
#1

When letting my clutch out in reverse I get a fairly moderate shudder and even a little clanking sound in unison with the shudders. Especially when backing up and incline. If I increase the RPMs it is much less severe but still present. I notice nothing in any of the forward gears. This shudder was present for some time but only minor until the last week. Where to look? Thanks.

Try looking into the clutch inspection area first and see if there is any evidence of the dual mass flywheel coming apart. If everything looks good then check the CV joints on the rear axles. There should not be any "play" or looseness in the joints. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

You may have glazed the flywheel and pp.

i do not think the cause is clutch related if it does not do it in first, though the symptom may show up there - the clutch spins the same direction in both gears, at about the same rate, and the gear ratios are similar, so if it were the clutch, it should do it in both gears

more likely it is gear related, probably side loading of a shaft or bearing, transferring uneven spinning to the clutch

however, i would still also poke around in there, especially if you have a lot of miles on that clutch

My car does this too. I've been told it has something to do with a glazed FW/PP or clutch, or both.

Flash has a good point and I think he's right. I do only notice this problem in reverse, but sometimes in 1st, when I really feather out the clutch slowly and gradually, I get this shuddering VERY severely, just like in reverse.

Mine used to shudder pretty bad in 1st and reverse after lots of stop and go traffic.

I replaced all clutch components and have not had a problem.

Reverse is taller than 1st so it makes sense that it would be worse
