968 + short shifter = no reverse
#1

Hi guys,

I am have the most annoying problems with my 944racing short shifter. I have tried installing it twice and I cannot get reverse to engage when I install the kit "normally". Normally the screw would go into a divot in the transmission rod, but when the unit is in that position the shifter cannot push the rod in far enough to engage reverse.

If install the unit with the block, that the transmission rod inserts thru, flushed with the transmission rod and just held in tightly with the funky screw then reverse will engage, but that position is not very secure. Its hard to explain without pictures. I think my kit is not manufactured correctly.

I'm going to give them an email, do you guys have any suggestions?

A while back on 968.net, several people had issues with reverse. 944racing has since corrected the problem, but I don't have the details on the issue. My short shifter from them is working fine, so you may wish to just contact them for a workaround or replacement.

Yes, the early kits had a design flaw. The ball joint was built very strong, but unfortunately makes contact with the tranny housing. I think you have a few options. Send the unit in to 944racing to fix free of charge, get there directions on how to modify it to work properly yourself, or having someone hold it into reverse position, and mark with a marker where it makes contact and grind some of the material away on the ball housing on the kit. I modified mine myself, and it has worked perfect eversince. Good luck.

don't forget to readjust the shifter up front when you are done getting things set and the rods adjusted in the rear - that angle and positioning is critical to smooth operation
