Short throw shifter
#1

Has anyone run across a way to shorten the throw of the shifter? I searched the posts and dug into the DIYs but could not find anything.

Thanks

I was thinking about a way to reduce the hight of the shifter, maybe an inch or 2. The inspiration was the Porsche GT.

There used to be a few choices now there's only one - the shorter shift lever from speed6 or Kokeln. These levers require the use of a momo knob [or similar], they don't fit a factory knob.

There used to be an actual 968 short shifter, but once it sold out none of the vendors wanted to do another run[?]. Sadly that's the problem with a car that wasn't mass produced like the 944.

I have access to a machine shop so I may try to design & fab one...

Has anyone done this mod? I am a chicken #$%^ when it comes to taking things apart inside a car. Always seems like I can never figure out where that screw on the carpet was supposed to go.

I'd love to see a DIY on this.

I cut my lever.

There I said it! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I cut the lever about 1.5" shorter. I used an adapter for a MOMO knob.

Had to trim the shift boot a little to get a nice fit.

Took less than an hour from to start to finish.

I also have a stuttgrat shift block I have yet to install.

I checked out the shifters that Cal noted.

Which one looks better to you gents? I'd really like to shorten the throw a bit. 25% sounds perfect, but its hard to know until you've tried it.

I would love to see pics. A DIY would be great. Can you post more info so that I could repeat what you have done? Why can't we cut the lever and use the OEM shift know for a stock look? I am not a fan of the MOMO knobs and would like to keep the Porsche shift knob.

Thanks

The OEM lever and knob are square shaped in cross section. The MOMO is circular. There is an adapter to fit the round MOMO to the square lever.

I will try and put something together, it is pretty straight forward.

Cool. What MOMO knob did you choose? I like the look of the anatomic 3000. the wood inlay matches my interior and the shape looks like it would have a nice feel.

The picture looks great!

Seems like the right height. If you could walk me through the disassembly, cut down process and what you did to get the boot to fit so well, I would appreciate it. When I do mine I'll try to get pictures so it can be a DIY thing for the next guy.

I would like to keep the OEM shift knob if it's easy, if not the MOMO 3000 would be sweet.

@Xrad:

That s/shifter doesn't look correct for a 68[?] - I've seen those offered for 911's.

If it's the one that replaces the shift lever, those are available here in the US.

The type I'd like to install is the short shift linkage that is fitted to the transmission.

My car had a Speed6 lever when I bought it and I absolutely hated it. Shifts were notchy, it rattled like hell, just not a good experience at all. The factory shift knob weighs about a pound for a reason, IMO.

I heartily enjoyed hurling that shift lever into a dumpster as hard as I could after replacing it with the stock lever and knob. Now it shifts like a Porsche again.

I too would love one of the transaxle type short shifters that a number of board members have, and I'll get one if it ever surfaces again.

Cheers,
