short shifter kits?

Beyond all the little annoying things me and my dad have been fixing on the new car the thing that real bugs me the most is the shifter. It feels like absolute crap imo, it is SUPER notchy and is honestly hard to find first and second, and going in reverse is too easy, the "wall" is not firm enough and i keep sliping into it rather than first. This is obviously a problem especially when im trying to down shift to second and "slide" into the reverse wall. Compared to my dad's car(1991, carrera 2) it doesn't feel like a Porsche at all. It has a different knob on it so it is possibly aftermarket but im not 100% sure. Anyways i NEED a new shifter and i want to hear what you all have in your car, what feels good what doesn't, and what is even for sale still??

What's up with the T shifter, looks like a Hurst.



D1R has a short shifter but you missed ordering the last batch a month ago. Maybe someone has one they may sell you.

Search around the site and you will find a LOT of discussion about the shifter in our 968's.

From what I have understood, only the original works well. Something to do with being the proper weight to offset vibration.

My car has 104,000 miles on it and the shifter is a pleasure to deal with. It is still the original. The location of reverse may be something some of us do not like, but I have no problem getting into any of the gears. The first few times I used the 968, avoiding reverse when wanting 1st from a dead stop was a bit of a challenge, but now it is never an issue.

I would suggest you search for an original replacement. Most of the common colours are still available as new, or you can get one from a wrecked 968. If the color does not match, there are places that can replace the boot.

I got a short shifter from a 944 that the mechanic said wouldn't work. He put in another one which I assume was for a 968 and it works well. You just really need to go left with reverse. I miss it all the time in both cars. Perhaps it's my eye to hand coordination or I'm just a pathetic shifter! Lol It does require more attention on the lift or trailer and I'm always thinking damn when I miss it. It's one of those little things with the 968 that are part of the car. No biggie!

Wow, lol, was that thing taken out of a jet? :-)



Go for the original one, nothing wrong with it. Just like Langly said, getting used to the reverse takes only a short amount of time. But it is pretty sensitive. BMW uses the same way, but it would be better if the resistance would be a little tougher on our cars.

Shifter knob you have there may not work well. It sounds like you have some worn out stuff also. Check the pin between the shifter at the linkage and also the bushing at the back. These cars have remarkably crisp shifting mechanism considering how far it has to travel.

first, let's be clear that we use the right terminology.



the shifter is the piece that connects the shift linkage to the shift knob.



the shift knob is the thing you put your hand on to shift the gears.



the D1R short shift kit works extremely well. it utilizes the OEM knob, does not vibrate or buzz, and is not notchy. it is the only one like that. it shortens the stock pattern by about 20-25%



as for missing the ordering, stand by for more information on that. i may have a happy accident for you.

Random question in this thread. I have a spare shifter.(Ordered the whole thing when I really only needed the bushings)

So I'm wondering, what can I do to shorten the throw by just modifying the OEM shifter?

you really can't. due to the notches that are required to hold the shifter knob in place, you can't even cut it. even if you did cut it and reweld it, it wouldn't change it much, and the weld won't likely hold up long term.



the other ones out there on the market buzzed.



that's exactly why i made mine. i essentially followed the OEM design, but altered the length and pin geometry to shorten the throw, without losing the OEM knob.
