shine a little light on me

the numbers are complete assembly difference. the whole thing came out intact.

i would presume that the halogen unit would weigh less, but i don't have one here yet.

I have to say, I don't dislike the look of the new fender, but despite my bashing of the pop-ups all these years, I have to admit the very low fender line they allow is a very cool feature of the 968. I also like the 993, but between the two, I prefer the look of the stock 968 fender. That's why I think that if the consensus is that the 968 fender is the preferred look (and I don't think that has been settled yet - maybe a poll is in order), the 993 lights are out, and a different light solution within the stock fender seems like the best option. I was going to find a local fiberglass guy to do this to my car anyway (a la JarmoL's solution), but if the wizards and elves at D1R's workshop can come up with something, I'd prefer to support them.

A little off topic, but I forgot to ask: so what does it take to remove the washer fluid reservoir? Do you have to fully remove the fender, or is there any shortcut? Thanks.

with the exception of the one nut in the fender well, and the one screw below the fill neck, i gave the steps above in post 47

i should mention that you should syphon out the fluid first or you will have a mess if there is much in there

Thanks. Do you have to take the fender completely off to remove the washer reservoir, or can you get to it by just loosening most of the screws and moving it out of the way?

Hey Flash,

Once again you got my blood going with your mods...... Either way, with or without the fenders. If the pop up can be replaced,

I'm interested...........Thanks

Once again Flash has expended a lot of time and effort on a 968 project. It's a shame it didn't work out first time. From a consensus point of view I prefer the original line over the headlight area. Is it possible to fashion an E-type Jag style headlamp where the slope is more akin to the 968 ie more laid back. Nonetheless, great effort Flash.

It sounds like another vote for the original fender line...

And yes, we all need to give Flash a big thank you for all the effort he put into this job.

you don't have to remove the fender at all to remove the washer reservoir

i'm not sure what any other light would look like in the fender. i'm going to be looking into a few things to see what else can be done

The fender that the DeutscheNine guys produced could house a 993 halogen, however it required some cutting of the structure behind the lights. I weighed a 993 halogen unit and it cam in at 4.925 lbs. They stated that they produced a lighting unit that weighed under 1 lb using the 993 lens that wouldnt require any modification to the frame as well. These products never made it to their website though; just a bunch of updates on RL spanning a couple of years.

Now that I see it on the car, I'm afraid I moved to the " hate it " camp. Bummer, I had high hopes it would turn out without a single mm difference vs the stock dimensions / lines..

Another vote for the stock fender line...

I never realized how much I like the front-end shape that the pop-up light allow.

Having just clayed and polished, not yet waxed my car, the front fenders have such a feel and look about them that I believe is one of the factors that gives the 968 it's classic yet enduring look! Sort of like a well rounded firm and tight little ass on that woman who passes you that you cream on! We may all have different thoughts on our lites but let's not mess with that tight little and well rounded fender!

knowing what i know now, there is no way that the fender mentioned above works any better. it will either send the light in wrong right angle, cut off the lower part of the beam, or stick up higher than stock. can't fight the physics.

as for messing with the fender, i still want to get rid of that obnoxious corner, and end up with something smoother, but that's another project for another day, because it also means having to mess with the same body line all the way down the car, and i'm just not ready to do that yet.

given the changing attitudes about this project, i have to ask the question:

assuming i can get the fit right, and can add back in the body line aft of the wheel arch, knowing that the fender curve sits high, and assuming that some cutting needs to be done in the panel right behind the headlight, how many are still interested in this? i wouldn't have to do this one in batches, but it does help to prioritize the project by knowing what the demand is

I have to go witht the stock fenders and maybe even give up some of the beam as I rarely drive my car at night anyhow.

it's about half of the low beam. that's the problem i have with it. i'm not sure what other solution there will be, but it would certainly involve a LOT more modification to the lines.

i am quite certain that porsche went through this very dilemma when they designed the car, and ultimately ended up with what they did. there just isn't room in there to mount anything else, and still meet DOT requirements.

I looked at this same issue several years back when I was looking at the ways the 968 body could be improved. I did various CAD/Illustrator/Photoshop designs including the version I use in my avatar. I looked at headlights from the Carrera GT, Cayman and Boxster as alternatives. Regardless, it required major changes to the front including moving around several components under the hood as well.

I have also looked at using LED's for the secondary lighting throughout the car now that the technology has evolved. I thought it would be nice to incorporate these into the interior, side and tail lights. Making the car more viewable at night as well as providing better lighting within the interior. The trick would be in retaining the classic 968 feel.

Looking at the pictures you can definitely see the 911 look. This is even more prominent from the 3/4 point of view. I think if you like the classic look of the 911 this would be an obvious win. I am more inclined to leaving the angle of the front end alone. As flash mentioned already, I am sure Porsche spent A LOT of time discussing this exact issue.

Flash, I appreciate you sharing your efforts with us since it provides a real world perspective of the problem at hand!

If a different lighting system can be done with out changing the fenders I'm good with that.

I keep looking at Flash's pic of the higher fenders, maybe a different lighting system (less costly halogens)

without cutting mteal will work.

That's exactly what I have in mind as well. Others have done this (primarily for racing applications where aesthetics are a not a consideration), so it's clearly possible.

Wonder if lights from the new beetle may work..Not sure if there is enough of a market for the racers.

Flash will make it good if there is enough interest...cutting of metal is what I'm not comfortable with.

Keep relooking at the pics and it doesn't seem to add alot of height to the fender. It

seems to me that the light housing is more upright (993ish). that soem folks dislike..
