shine a little light on me
#1

over the years, people have kept asking me when i was going to do a headlight conversion kit. i have always said "no".

i have recently been rethinking that. i haven't fitted it to the car yet, but will this weekend.

how does this look?

Whoa... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> Let me be the first to say, "Wow!" That looks like it should have looked coming from the factory. The line forms behind me!

OK, now that I got the first response in, I have to ask a couple of questions. What type of headlight is that? You've said you hate the 993 lights (I respectfully disagree on that point), yet your looks pretty similar to a 993. And did you weigh how much weight the conversion removes?

it is a 993 light. litronic to be specific, though i will probably go halogen.

i never said i hated the 993 lights. i said i hated the 993.

i haven't weight it yet, but i'd say about 40lbs removed.

suspiciously like a 993. As always I admire the work, but the line of the 968 headlight when is down is one of my favorite design elements.

i'm not sure how i feel yet. that's partly why i posed the question. i'll know more when i put it on the car. i'm working on a fairly significant front end face lift.

I feel a VERY long thread coming on...

I think pop-up headlights are SO two decades ago, and have long thought a tasteful fixed headlight conversion would do wonders for freshening up the look of the car. The 993 lights really look like they belong in these fenders.

+ 1 on the WOW factor.. this is the only conversion I have seen to date that looks "factory" . That said, I am still on the fence about fixed lights on this car, with a 75-25 ratio against it, but that could change..

What I dislike about the 968 lights is the way they lay flat on their backs (although not as much as the 928's, which really look ridiculous, imho), pointing at the sky. To me, if you're going to have pop-up headlights, they should be hidden when not in use. I don't see either the form or function aspect in Porsche's approach. Having said that, I do admit they've grown on me over the years; guess I've gotten used to them. But two thumbs WAY up on Flash's solution.

This is even tougher for us coupe owners..half of all sports cars and super sports cars have come out with hatchbacks in the last several years and the trend seems to continue, so the the ONLY feature now that dates our cars is the pop up lights. I don't think those will EVER be back in style, just too impractical and no one cares about the novelty / quasi-unique aspect anymore. Sure, our " dated " lights are only visible in the evening / night, so maybe it's not that big of a deal, but if this thing turns out as great and as OE as it looks , it could prove to be an even more compelling reason to hold on to our 968 forever ..

Crap, you promised Ayn (sp?) was going to make you wind down the DS1 industry and then you stick your Darwinian hand in the 968 DNA. There goes the saving account - again! Glad your at least off the Litronic path and back to good old halogen. I really love the performance of the stock 968 lights, best output and beam pattern I have EVER had in a vehicle. If you can simulate that I'm in for a "hurt'in" again.

I agree our cars still have a very modern look for the most part. Some of the more classic/unique design features are returning to cars in the current Porsche line up. Examples can be seen with the side mirror mounting returning to the door instead of the A Pillar, Recessed hood badges (like the early 968s), and body shapes that incorporate both strong lines and soft curves. This update and a 40 pound weight savings would be huge!

Wow, just what I wanted. Did the fender need to be reshaped?

the headlight bucket needed reshaping, but not the rest of the fender.

i'll hang one on the car this weekend as a part of the fit check so everybody can see how it compares.

don't expect this project to go quickly. it took 7 years to get to this point. it will be at least the summer before it's ready for the public. i just don't have time to get it painted, and then a clear bra on it before the paso event, and i won't take it to paso without being painted, nor on fresh paint with no clear bra.

They don't look too out of place sitting next to new 997's...

Personally, I really like the pop-up lights. I think they look cool in the down position, (always liked the look on the 928, too), and in the raised position, they remind me of two of the first cars I ever owned, a Bug-Eye Sprite and an Opel GT.. But that's what makes horse racing.

i like them too, as they remind me of my all time favorite car (the lamborghini muira)

but things i would like about the kit:

the weight loss. 40lbs off the very front of the car makes a big difference in how it handles bumps and dips

the aerodynamic improvement from closing off the gap would help fuel economy and top speed, as well as front end high speed stability. it's a lot more than you think too. remember that high speed cars close off every gap for a reason.

the rigidity of the fiberglass means no more dings in the top of the fenders when i lean on the car. it isn't as fragile as people think either, so unless i get in a wreck, fiberglass is actually tougher than steel.

the simplification of the lighting means a lot less maintenance

the 993 lights are more adjustable

the 993 lights have more options regarding the light itself (halogen, litronic, bulb type and color, etc)

the 993 lights have a lot more availability

still, i won't know for sure how i feel about it until i mount one on the car and compare, which is slated for this weekend, since i have to remove the front clip anyway
