Shifter assembly
#1

I removed the center console trim to open up the shifter arrangement for an overhaul of the bushings, what I found is evidence of someone being in there long ago who assembled the parts incorrectly.

First off, the two shims found on either side of the rod (part number N0273812) were missing altogether, which largely explains the slack I always felt excessive in the shifter. Trouble is, Porsche no longer sells these shims. Does anyone know what is the thickness of these shims? This would facilitate greatly the task of finding adequate washers.

Second, one of the cup springs was located on the passenger side of the rod. I have replacements, but looking at the diagram I'm not 100% sure which way they are mounted next to one another. Is it the outer diameter that makes contact, or inner?

Thanks for any help!

All of the necessary pieces came with the short shifter kit I purchased a few years ago. You may want to use this opportunity to upgrade, the short shifter is really a nice improvement over stock.

Hi

Thinking back to when I redid my the bushes on the lever,

Items 20 the two Belleville washers go outer edge to outer edge to give the spring loaded effect, Item 18 were quite thin washers made out of a spring steel type material, but you can figure out your washer thickness when you try to fit it all together, too thick and you will never get the spring clip on the end, too thin and you back to having free play.

I replaced all the bushes, the bottom one benefits from a good soak in next to boiling water to get fitted, I broke the first one I tried to fit

There is a fellow who sells the needed bushings on Ebay. I used his kit and the fit was great.

I also replaced the shift lever - different from the 944 part, and I believe Sunset had to order it from Germany - problem was that the linkage was ovaled with use. You may want to measure this with a micrometer to see if you have any ovaling. There are DIY fixes however I wasn't impressed with any of them and elected to replace.

Partworks.de sells the kits to repair the rear end on the gearbox

The plastic bush, the 4 seals, and other bits

The cross tension arm across the top of the gearbox also wears out, and all gets very sloppy and horrid

The parts from Porsche are not cheap, so I made up new parts from stainless turnbuckle from a ships chandler, and Hiem rose joints, cost about 30% of the price of Porsche parts, and will last forever

Thanks! All useful. I ordered the full set of shifter bushings from 944online. I will have a closer look at the pin that attaches to the rod for wear.

I hadn't yet turned my attention to the rear portion of the linkage. I suppose the plastic joint and seals are the parts that wear, along with the joint rod and ball pins? I will inspect first before ordering. I have a feeling it won't be fun going in there...

You could say space is a bit short of supply, a combination of rear wheel arch and underneath, but not easy
