Self driving cars
#21

Sooner or later you will be in that demographic. Perhaps you could color coordinate your driving shoes to your velour outfit!

And today there was another announcement that there was a 2nd Tesla accident regarding the self driving mode. Will this be the end of Tesla? stay tuned for future announcements. I remember when I was about 8 years old in Popular Science magazine there was an article regarding self driving cars on the highway. It involved putting a cable in the highway to allow cars to be driven at high speeds of about 100 MPH. If all cars are moving at same speed there is no problems. Sort of what you see on TV with Formula One cars. Everyone going the same speed. Now that would be a sight. You get on the highway, program your destination and the car goes into the fast lane . You would only have to merge back into the slow lane when exiting the highway.

After 9 hrs on the highway today on the way to SLT, I'm ready for my car to drive me home. So many careless drivers out there, I was afraid to open my eyes.

One of my friends just bought his brand new BMW which has a "come pick me up" feature ; he can simply summon the car to start itself, and then self-drive from its parking location, using either his smart phone , or , the electronic key fob link to find him and pull up right where he is waiting . Not sure what the range is ( though I suspect it must not be much ) or how many obstacles it's capable of driving through - from underground parking garages , around city blocks, corners , etc. but he raves about the technology !

I told him that technology is benign and what would really be impressive would be for someone to come up with that self-driving feature for my six speed !! ??

That is definitely cool, reminds me of the James Bond movie where he was driving his BMW from the back seat using a wireless device.  But the features that really excite me are for example.....   1. The auto braking when the car gets too close to the guy in front.   2.  The lane drifting sensors that keep cars in a lane.  Imagine how many deaths and injuries and property damage we can prevent with these basic features.

Yeah I rented a new MBZ SUV ( for a business trip two weeks ago ) which had the lane drifting alert system ; both a "pulse" sent to the steering wheel and the side view mirror little red light turns on. And if there is a car near by, it'll have have audible alert , and the Sid mirror red light flashes , and the steering wheel vibrates . Crazy, you'd have to be in deep REM sleep to miss all that !!

My Infiniti has these and they are really cool. Be unable to hit the car in front of you, especially in traffic, would seem to have the capacity to prevent deaths. I can even turn on my cruise crontrol and if I enter a work zone or traffic slowdown it will slowdown and then speed up when traffic allows it.

If I ever get one of those I'm going to ask a hacker to reprogram it so it smashes into any Prius it detects and maybe occasionally bump a cyclist or two who also think they own the road. Then I can just blame it on " system failure " .

Funny story :  so I spoke to my friend who was raving about this pick me up feature and asked him if he used it yet.   With a very disenchanted tone he said :  yeah, but I was clearly misinformed because it's extremely limited  ; the car can only drive itself just 10 FT., and only forward.   I did not want to laugh out loud and add insult to injury, but I laughed internally.  If only he hadn't boasted so many times about this feature enabling the car to pick him up from a restaurant several blocks away in the rain, he probably would not feel as bad as he does now ..   10 FT ?!  Clearly that feature is designed solely to allow the car to pull out of a very tight parking spot, where your opening the doors and getting in may be a challenge, but that's about all !  And when you park it you need to always back it in , if you ever want to use the " convenience " capabilities  Tongue   Ugh, so the lesson is : never boast about ,or promote anything until you actually test it in person !

It's fascinating to watch the many facets of this self driving thing ..from the heated debate of who should and can be held legally liable for death , injury and / or property damage accidents ( whether it's tne car manufacturer, the self driving system manufacturer , the car owner by virtue of " permissible driver " doctrine , even though that permitted driver is a computer , or all of the above , and to what extent each ..), to insurance companies who are also debating who they will or will not agree to insure based on their underwriting risk tolerance , to the latest conflict between Uber and DMV : Uber started using their self driving cars this week ( with a driver sitting at the wheel , but with the automatic driving mode on ) in San Francisco . This is in direct violation of CA DMV prohibiting them to do that until a permit is issued, as required by CA law. The DMV specifically notified Uber they are not allowed to use self driving cars until if and when a permit is grated , to which the response from Uber was essentially : " sue us " , we're ignoring DMV's regulations ..

Not sure this fits under the heading of self-driving cars but actually almost self-assembling cars.

Watch this and you'll better understand why manufacturing jobs will never be what they once were.

Once upon a time, this was science fiction.

Tesla has the summons feature.  My wife's car can park itself in the garage, and come out on it's own (provided you un-plug it).  It can't un-plug itself.  I think this is exactly for what Flash was talking about, tight garages or... showing off.

I see a lot of bad drivers out there.  I'm seeing more and more that they are millennials.   I think they go through withdrawal symptoms when removed from their phone for more than 2 minutes.  How many people who txt and drive is really scary.  This is the crowd that isn't interested in driving, and would prefer not to own a car.  This generation is more used to their parents driving them around until their 22, so to have a computer to drive for them makes perfect sense to them.   When you don't have to drive, you can check facebook on your phone, txt and look at cat videos.

For long drives and traffic, I love the autonomous driving on the Tesla.  I can relax.  Technically, you still have to pay attention and look out for white trucks with nothing underneath the trailer pulling in front of you.

I hate driving the 968 and the manual transmission in traffic.

Added comment, apparently the biggest issue with autonomous driving is the crazy traffic in California.  Too many people driving on the shoulders at 60 MPH, cutting over white lines, motor cycles between lanes, people making their own lanes and torn up freeways.   Apparently when the google cars get confused, they just stop.  I think they learned this from Microsoft.
