Sad and ironic - RIP Paul Walker
#21

AWE straight pipes? There are several clips on YouTube. Makes a hell of a racket, but if it's an improvement over the original exhaust I'm not so sure...
but I think we all need to be aware that another contributing factor was the age of the tires, 9 years! I know many of us do not travel enough miles to wear down the tires but we need to be aware of the age.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me...z2x1urYeiE
I was thinking about this today and realized the tires on my six speed may be pretty old as well ( not 9 years but thought they could be pushing 7 maybe ) and the fact that I've put so few miles on them since then does not make them any younger . So I checked the records and found out that I bought them just about 5 years ago, same month :-) . They're Michelin Pilot Sport II and you can't get anything better constructed than that, but still..rubber is rubber so I think "baby needs new shoes" gets put on this year's shopping list .

And at about $ 1K for the set they'll cost just little less than a set for the Bugatti Veyron do : $ 50,000 for four of those. And how do I know this, you ask ? News story today describing the gift that Justin Bieber's producer just handed "JB " : a Veyron. Given Bieber's driving habits they mentioned he'll wear the tires off that car in no time and that's how the $ 50 K cost for a set reference made its way into the story. Sheesh, what were we saying about drivers that have no business driving 1000 HP cars just because they have the money ?! Sheesh.

I briefly heard a news story breaking this morning that Porsche plans to counter sue both the driver's estate as well as Paul Walker's estate ( blaming even Paul Walker for his own death ! Huh ?!! ) for damaging the firm's reputation as a result of what Porsche claims was reckless behavior from both driver and passenger that led to the accident . Wow,..though why would we be surprised at this tactic by Porsche ..?

Frankly it is perfectly understandable. If everyone that drives a supercar and who has an accident is allowed to sue Porsche then that opens the door to massive liabilities. We as a society believe there are no consequences to any behavior and if there is then someone else is to blame. Two weeks after I bought my first 968 I almost crashed it coming up the mountain. Only by the grace of God did I miss wrecking it. My first thought after I changed my pants was that I needed to take some lessons to learn how to properly drive this car. This lead me to Bertil Roos and two driving and racing session lessons. Little did I know that this was analogous to mainlining smack but I had a different perspective on the appropriate way to drive a sports car. Flash quiet!

I really can't see either how Porsche could be blamed for this, even if the car had no brakes (they were ok apperently). You are responsible to check the your vehicle before you start driving on public roads.

And the car was modified...significantly so, according to reports .   Porsche would no doubt argue even the slightest modifications to a car like that would compromise its performance, stability, etc, etc, but severe deviations from the vehicle's factory engineering only adds to the driver and owner /passenger culpability .

Um, are we forgetting to mention the obvious? driving at illegal and reckless speeds? (Read: driver at fault) On public roadways? (Read: driver endangering self and others)

I could go on...

As obvious as that may be , in our wonderful litigated environment that by itself would not absolve Porsche of liability in that exceeding the speed limit and even reckless driving should be a " foreseeable expectation " associated with such a car and every feasible precaution / safety feature should be put in place to mitigate the risk of the car not responding to extraordinary driving conditions , whether or not they may be illegal .

Absurd ? Yes, and welcome to the U.S. liability domain , lol. When businesses are sued for injuries sustained by burglars falling through the roof while trying to rob the place , this claim against Porsche almost seems reasonable :-(

What's that about the burglar thing? Never mind, I don't think I want to know.

Lol, famous case many years ago and it made national news but fortunately sanity ultimately prevailed and the original verdict in favor of the injured burglar was overturned on appeal . Anyway, back to this case : since the plaintiff's attorney is a friend of a good friend of mine and we all do have an occasional drink together, next time we all meet I'll see how much he's willing to reveal about the case ..particularly since a couple of drinks tends to enable more disclosure than usual .. should be very interesting .

Incidentally, he did obtain a substantial settlement out of Porsche for another client who was injured in a 911 Turbo , and that claim was also based on insufficient safety features grounds , but I don't remember the specifics of the faulty design allegations in that trial , it was more than fifteen years ago . Nor do I remember if excessive speed, or modifications to the car were involved and it certainly wasn't two professional drivers who should have known better as was the case here, so totally different scenario at play in this case I think .

Safety warning label "Do not drive this automobile into stationary objects or other moving vehicles"...that should cover it.

This is NOT a joke ;  I have seen labels on automobile sun shields with a printed warning ( on both sides ) which states    Remove shield before driving   or  Do not drive car with shield in place   or something along those lines.. this is what has become of a  "  it's never my fault , surely I can find someone else to blame " society.. especially if they have deep pockets  :angry2:

My point exactly. So you juice up your friend and then pump him for confidential info. Hmmm. Ever think about being a spy or working for security services?

And here's yet one more article pointing straight at what so many other experts have already suggested was the key factor leading to the crash : the really old tires. https://www.yahoo.com/news/truth-behind-...32892.html

Yes, the piece says exactly what many on here say constantly, 5 year old tires may look new, but they are not like they were when they were new.

I see it on a specific corner on my way home from work. As my tires have aged, the speed at which I lose adhesion has decreased, even though the tread is virtually unchanged over the past two years.

Great story as I just put a new set of Hoosiers on the track car for the next event. I have 9 runs on the current set but thought hey they will be a great back up and a new set will gripppp.

Still inexplicable that a professional driver , an instructor no less, overlooked the tires issue . I wonder if they even bothered to check the pressure.
