RS barn SMFW
#21

On decel my brain automatically puts the clutch in at 2300 RPM when coming to a stop so nobody stares at my ratteling Porsche.

Other than that I get no noise at idle or on accel that is perceivable to the untrained eye

So the noise is really only noticeable on decel, and only at one rpm (2300)? That really sounds very livable and manageable. Can't wait to put mine in.

you learn how to avoid it or create it - there are 2 times that it bugs me most:

1. on a hot day after running at idle (step on the clutch to make it go away)

2. running up the hill to my house, or in a parking lot in 2nd gear - i find that coincidentally i am often enough at 2300 that it bugs me

still though, the improvement in running is worth it to me

also, a decent exhaust hides a lot of it, as does having the stereo on

That's my solution (at least the stereo part - the exhaust is on the way) to the shifter buzz as well. That and having the sunroof off as much as possible.

Hey, well I got the flywheel put in yesterday. Haven't had much chance to drive it though.

Yes, there are some decent rattles at certain rpms, but they can be mostly avoided, so it's not so bad.

Also the car definitely pulls better, will get a better chance to try it this weekend.

Initial impressions, seems worth the money and rattles.

cheers,

Tore

Did you get a 13 lb or an 18 lb SMFW? Which brand?

I got the Motorsport one from RS barn, it weighs 8.1 kg or about 18 lbs. The old DMF weighed 13.8 kg.

It's made by Fidanza.

I didn't know the 18 lb flywheel RS Barn sells is made by Fidanza. So they make both the 18 lb and the 13 lb flywheel. Spec also makes a 13 lb one. Other than the fact that the supercharger doesn't work with the 13 lb flywheel, what are the pros and cons of the 13 vs. 18 lb unit? I was reviewing the PCA and NASA racing rules last night, and it seems that lightened flywheels of any weight are allowed by both bodies.

that certainly would be a new change to the rule - they were very clear before about the minimum weight of the flywheel - pete went through quite a bit of effort to get his approved for PCA

Flash,

Yes, I remember that, and you're right, for the Stock class, here's what the 2011 PCA rules state:

"968 may use 944S2 or 968 Turbo S flywheel."

I imagine this means the 18 lb flywheel. The Spec class, on the other hand (the 968 falls into the SP3 group), is much more generous:

"
M. Any flywheel, clutch disk, and pressure plate of stock diameter may be used."

yup - that's exactly why it was such a process - the 12lb flywheel is not allowed, as it is too light - the S2 is about 16lbs but a lot harder to fit as i remember, and the Turbos S is 18 - that's why pete went the extra yard to get his approved
