Valve Springs
#1

Has anyone uprated the valve springs on the 968, and if so what did you use and what

difference did it make? I am about to replace the springs in my 944S2 and as the 68 and

the S2 use the same springs I thought I may as well ask here.

Thanks

Peter, I recommend OEM valve springs for the Porsche. Have never heard of any performance advantage from any other brand. When I was younger and drove Chevy and Fords we used to change the camshaft as well as the valve springs to after-market items to increase performance. The Porsche Factory has already optimized these items and that is one way they got such high performance from our four-cylinder engines. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

if you are changing cams to performance cams, and change to solid lifters, stiffer valve springs will make a difference, because you will then be revving 8500 - however, the stock springs seem to have no issues up to 7800, and the ofters will probably float long before you have a spring issue

Peter, be sure to include Sunset Imports in your comparaison. I have found that they frequently have the lowest prices on Original Porsche Parts. email: porscheparts@sunsetimports.com Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Bob,

Thanks anyway but I have ordered them already, along with new belts chain and sliders. The springs

work out at £12.50 each set, could be worse.

I am just looking forward to getting the S2 firing on all cylinders.

Thanks

I'm running POwerHaus Valve Springs in my car. 11.6:1 CR & 7,700RPM. I'd rather be safe the sorry.

I'm entertaining the idea of getting the performance cams myself in a couple of months when I'm finally able to do the front end and vario cam servicing. The mechanic told me that new lifters go for about $50 each x 16. Would it be worth keeping the stock lifters and going with stiffer springs only? I will most likely have to wait an additional month for each potential upgrade (wallet needs recharging <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

As for the performance cams themselves, do they add anything in terms of performance if you do not have the exhaust / headers / chip installed? I'm planning on getting all the stuff sometime next year anyways, so getting the cams while everything else is being worked on will save me a bundle in labour costs.
