RPMs drop REAL low when i step on the clutch
#1

alright, heres what happens

i get in my car in the morning, and this happens pretty much every morning

i start it (which is usually uneventful) and i start driving down the street

when i come to the first stop sign i step on the clutch, very interesting so far i know

now when i step on the clutch the RPMs drop down to 200-300 and then the engine kind of recovers to a very stable 900-1000 idle and this happens for the first 4 or 5 minutes

it always bothered me but i dealt with it, yesterday though, i stepped on the clutch and the car actaully stalled at the stop sign

i have a new fuel filter and check valve that i have not had a chance to put in yet

any other ideas of what this could be?

thanks

joe

when you step on the gas when you are stepping on the clutch, what happens? does it lurch forward like it wants to go?

i am suspecting that air got in there and the clutch is not engaging fully

It is probably the engine temperature sensor not providing proper cold running information.

After warm up, everything is fine so that shows it is a temperature related thing.

unless he has a persistent top end air leak - i had this in an mg once - the clutch wouldn't act right for the first few minutes, then after you had pumped it a few times, all was fine

you could be right though - so many components running these things - easy enough to tell with the answer to my question

no lurching, feels like a complete disengagement, plus dave and i were pretty careful when we did the clutch

it would be nice to start with just replacing a sensor or 2

how does the idle stablizer work in this car?

The idle stabilizer is an air valve that opens and closes to establish the idle RPM set by the computer. If it sticks or operates erratically, then the idle will hunt up and down. Your symptoms seem to rule that out since idle stabilizes quickly cold and is stable warm.

It is a chance, that it is the idle stabilizer valve and cleaning it is a no cost option. Temperature sensors or even throttle position sensors are candidates as well.
