round 12 next week
#21

i was using the same setup naturally aspirated as i ended up with supercharged. i did most of the testing of systems naturally aspirated. the car behaves pretty much the same. it's just more of it. the tone is smoother supercharged though, as there is more between the pulses.

i'll post details after i make this last attempt.

delayed AGAIN

looks like i won't get into the shop until early next week, due to parts not arriving, and then the weather (i don't drive the car in the rain)

film at 11.

just got back. interesting results. interesting and difficult choices.

first off, i have to say that i am incredibly impressed with the flowmaster hushpower 2 resonator. it smoothes out the raspy notes of each muffler we tried.

coupled with the dbx muffler, it had the best tone, a VERY smooth sound, and sounded like more cylinders. it was also snappiest up top, though there was a small almost flat spot at 3k, especially after lift off, which leads me to believe it was messing with the mixture a bit. as good as it sounded, it was still just a bit too loud, hitting 102db at 6k rpm. other ranges were not bad, but it was still just a touch too present in the cabin. i could definitely have lived with it if i could not have gotten it quieter.

coupled with the flowmaster super 5 however, it got much quieter. it dropped a full 10db at high rev. interior sound is almost nil. resonance is almost completely gone at freeway speeds. definitely nice. the tone has a slightly higher pitch to it than the dbx, and there is a slight flutter or wet sound at idle, but the overall drop in sound more than makes up for that. it was actually quite nice to run down the freeway and have the exhaust sound way back in the background, and not constantly droning. there does seem to be a slight decrease in upper rpm response, but not so much that it feels like a lot of power loss. all in all i think it is a good trade, as it seriously increases the likelihood of the wife being happy in the right seat, which means i have more opportunities to drive it.

so, after 14 different systems, and a whole lot of cash dropped (around $12k), i think i may just have something i can live with. i'll be driving it over the next few days, and we'll see how it goes.

p.s. - since mandrel bent tubing is readily available, any decent muffler guy out there can build you a very cool system for a little over $500. everything is available at summit. the flowmaster stuff has a lifetime warranty too.

super 50 muffler $132 or dbx muffler $147

hushpower 2 resonator $133

mandrel bends - $60 gets you plenty to work with

labor $200

total $525 to $540 - just add your tip of choice and you're done! perfect fit. great sound.

Flash,

I am curious as to how the sound of what you are trying to accomplish compares to the RS barn cat back system and the Billy Boat exhaust? Additionally, is there a power loss/gain comparison of what you are doing/using in your exhaust? I hope that was not as confusing as it sounds. I will probably be looking at purchasing a cat back for my SC car in a few months so I am trying to take in as much information as possible before deciding what to do.

I was typing while you posted the latest information. Considering that is about 1/2 of the Billy Boat and a a few hundred less than RS Barn your option is looking pretty good.

here's the big deal about it - on a supercharged car, it won't blow the back off of the muffler, like would happen with the dynomax (the muffler rs barn uses).

also, on any car, it will fit better than either the rs barn or the b&b. i never liked the way either of those systems fit in the car. they should have had more bends in the tubing so that it tucked up better. i realize that it means they would have cost more, but they would have looked better.

as for power gains or losses, i am not planning on doing any dyno testing. i am only going by seat of the pants. my buttometer is pretty well calibrated though at this point (the benefit of so many dyno pulls). my comments on power are above in post #31, but to sum up:

the dbx exhibited the typical straight through muffler results with both resonators (small gains way up top - small loss in the middle). it was a little less gain and less loss when coupled with the previous magnaflow resonator, but it was obnoxiously loud and nasty sounding in that configuration. it sounded great with the hushpower 2

the super 50 had no losses when used with the previous magnaflow resonator, but may have peeled a couple of ponies off the very top when coupled with the hushpower 2. much better sound though.

note: do not try to do this with typical muffler shop press bending though. it really screws up everything.

p.s. - everything is 2.5"

also - i am not making this system, or selling any of the components, at least at this time. you can get this stuff yourself and have your local guy do it.

mcl - it's open until the 17th. see the thread about that.

The RS Barn exhaust I have has no resonator. If you change the system do you just put the resonator right at the collector flange where it is on most cars or is there a better place for fitment?

though i had it pretty far forward when i had the magnaflow, based on conversations with flowmaster, and results from the installation, i would go as far back as possible for any resonator. porsche put it forward because they were doing some very different things in there. that is one of the things that corked things up though.

Illegal to drive in Ca without a cat. ( except on the track ) . For that matter, not sure there are more than a handful ( if any ) US states left where that's allowed any longer..

i would not delete the car on any car but a full blown race car. it messes with the part throttle and idle maps too much, and makes a big hole in the torque curve.

dan is correct. at my last count 37 states required the OEM or a CARB approved cat. those tiny hi-flow cats did not qualify. i think it is becoming 42 states this year. the target is all 50 by 2016.

i should also qualify the state count by saying that the number relates to the states requiring emissions testing like california. no state in the union allows you to remove the OEM catalytic converter (other than to be replaced with another approved unit). that is a federal law, and not anything the states have control over. they just don't generally enforce it. there isn't budget for federal police to be looking for converters on cars. a technicality i suppose, since nobody would likely ever know if you removed it, other than for an emissions test.

it's just like speeding. just because there is nobody there to catch you, does not mean that it's legal
