Norm, it certainly should fit since the body is the same on both models. The Owners Manual for my 968 advises against loading more than 75 pounds on the roof rack. Unless you have some very, very, lightweight wheels and tires, all four would be too heavy. Two would probably be allright, depending on how much the total weight is. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Sounds like a very bad idea to put so much weight up there. I saw pictures of some 911 guys carrying all 4 up there -- but I'd hate to be the one driving near those cars.

If you're looking to carry track tires, all 4 will fit in the hatch -- but it's a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, especially if you also carry other track items. If you're looking for more cargo space, you can put on a tow hitch and mount tires there (as if you're carrying a bike). I've seen some spec-Miata guys do this and seems like the better solution. It also gives you the option of trailering.

I have also carried all four wheels and tires inside the hatchback area along with a floor jack, small cooler and small dufffel bag and still had room for my wife in the passenger seat. This was when I was using 16 inch wheels. For my 18 inch wheels & tires I need to put one wheel & tire behind the passenger seat (good thing I married a short girl!) Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

thanks guys....

my car is race prepared with a roll cage using bigger 18" wheels/tires.

i can actually squeeze 3 wheels in back and 1 in front pass seat....however very inconvenient with little room for additional stuff.

i never thought i'd be selling my 993 (as I currently am) and dreaming of a truck and trailer

Do you really need a passenger seat?

You might want to take a look at this thread. It includes a lot of good information, including a 944 with four wheels on the roof!

Norm - The stock rack bolts right up (that's what those screws under the hatch glass sides are for). I've done it. Then, I engineered a fancy rack to hold all four tires and even road tested it. 'Bout scared the poop outta myself, though it did hold up. I just didn't feel comfortable driving 3 states over with it.

Back to the drawing board for me! Perhaps I'll modify my design to hold 2 or 3 wheels and give it another try.

Unfortunately, with my cage, I can't get more than 2 in the back (kills my hauling space too!) and only one into the front seat. I tried going through the sunroof to avoid the door beam limitation, etc, the whole thing got to the point of being silly.

I'll let you know if I find a better solution. Right now, I'm begging space from friends for the dry wheels/tires to get to/from races

hi dave

will the 944 oem rack work on 968? if so, whattya think about carrying only 2 wheels on the roof? i actually fit all 4 in my car today....3 in the back and 1 in the front seat. i don't want to do that much longer.

Yes, it will; PET shows the same part numbers for 944 roof rack and 968 roof rack, as I recall.

Well...

We'll test it out this weekend with a 2.5 hour drive up to Road America for the Club Race. I'll be happy to provide details and a review when I return (fingers crossed!).

Factory roof rack with an additional device I assembled:

oof - keep the speed WAY down (remember, higher speed means more kinetic force)and avoid any bumps and you may get lucky, but that's a LOT of weight up there, possibly beyond the factory specified limits of 175lbs - good luck and have fun

If you can find one, there was a optional "Porsche Roofload Transport System" that supports up to 165lbs.

Yup, that's what I have. Found one, I think here, that was factory 944/968 roof rack. To this, I added my own version of a tire-holding device.

Just got back from Road America tonight. Drove up, mounted wheels, unloaded an AMAZING amount of stuff from the car, raced all weekend (Fun Race, Sprint, and Enduro), pitched it all back into the car, pop the roof-rack back on, swap wheels... drive home.

She's parked in the garage still fully loaded (I am just too tired to take anything out of that car now).

Great racing, all dry weather, stellar PCA Chicago Region event.

Now, I desperately need a real Chicago pizza, so... if you'll excuse me for a bit...
