Rocky Mountain High in Colorado
#1

Three Days of Porsche Fun in Colorado

Alpine Mountain Region’s Rocky Mountain High

August 19-21, 2005

It’s time to plan for our 4th annual 968 Gathering in Colorado. August 19-21, get ready for Rocky Mountain High.

On Friday, August 19th we’ll begin with a scenic driving tour, taking in some fun Porsche mountain roads, with the usual array of interesting stops and sights along the way. The tour will wind up in beautiful Salida, CO that evening. We have a very nice hotel picked out, and a great rate of $60 arranged for our group.

Saturday, we’ll head over to Canon City, CO via the best canyon drive in the state, for a half-day rafting trip through Royal Gorge. The trip is sure to please everyone from the first-time rafter to the experienced thrill seeker. The Gorge is truly spectacular, over 1000 feet in depth, and we’ll pass under the highest suspension bridge in the world, which spans the chasm.

Once we’re done with rafting, we’ll stop at a terrific spot you won’t want to miss for a great family style dinner, before ending up in Manitou Springs, at the base of Pikes Peak. There, we have negotiated special rates ranging from $97.50 to $121.50 (many of the rooms have two bedrooms if you want to share) at the historic El Colorado Lodge, built in the early 1900s, featuring unique adobe architecture and a southwestern flair.

To wrap up a great weekend, on Sunday, we make the very short drive into Old Colorado City for the Good Times Car Show, joining many other marques and enthusiasts in one of the best car shows in Colorado. Prizes and lots of fun.

If you can’t make it to all three days of the event, you’re welcome to pick and choose just those activities you can attend.

We have very limited hotel space, so fill out the special registration form on the attachment, get it in to us ASAP along with your registration check, and follow the instructions to make your hotel reservations.

We look forward to seeing everyone for this fun filled weekend.

Had some trouble posting the attachment. Was initially a Word doc, but Eric (wisely) blocks those due to virus concerns. I just re-posted it as a PDF, and it is now down toward the bottom of my original post. If you'd like the Word doc, e-mail me and I'll send that version to you offline.

By the way, for those interested in some competitive driving, our region is hosting an autocross six days before this event (Saturday, August 13th) in Colorado Springs. If you're coming in from outside of the area, we'd love to have you come in a bit early and enjoy this extra event along with the Rocky Mountain High 968 Gathering.

How many cars have shown up in past years? Is this intended to be 968's only?

Is the 968 the featured model? Absolutely. Are other Porsches welcome? Absolutely.

This year, we're changing the event around quite a bit from the previous three.

We typically get 8-10 968s, plus a smattering of other Porsches. I think we had about 15 cars last year each day, with some able to come to part of it but not all, so probably had a total of 20 or so different cars over the weekend.

We've caught a bit of flak for being exclusive of other Porsche models in past years (you know how we 968 folks are!), so we're trying to be more inclusive of all Porsches this time around, and trying to make it a multi-region weekend event featuring the 968, but open to all. We've also never had a neat hook like the rafting trip as part of it before. We're running another weekend event with a tour down to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR in June, and have maxed it out with 18 cars and 32 people. I expect about the same for this event. We've held 15 rooms at each hotel with an option for more.

So, we'd love to get as many 968s as possible, but welcome all Porsches to come along as well.

Chris, my wife Pattie and I shall be there again. Looking forward to meeting "Flash" in person and seeing everyone else that can make it. This is always a fun event and one of the highlights of our calendar. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

<img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> THOUGHT I WOULD MAKE THIS A BIT EASIER FOR SOME ONE !!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I live in Colorado Springs and about 15+/- minutes from Manitou Springs.

If someone has found the hotel full or just wanted to save $100+/-, we have an extra bedroom available (queen size waterbed) for Saturday night, we are offering...

So now you have NO REASON not be here, here is your gas money <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Don't worry you would have all the ammenities, six-month old home, four BR, 3 Bath... Oh, two cats... 'spousey' (cindy) and myself...

We would enjoy the company, could arrange for Thursday night if you wanted to get here early...

.......just drop a PM if interested.....

Bummer I was so excited I just saw a bus billboard for the Grand Prix of Denver and thought the dates matched up... oh well. I will be attending bothe events looking forward to meeting up with everyone.

Who from the 968 group is doing the Saturday rafting trip? As an alternative, What does everyone think of possible doing a BBQ at our place near Down Town Denver on Saturday? It looks like Sat is reserved for white water rafting and Friday and Sunday are the Porsche related event days. If not we can always go out to dinner or something.

I'm away from home without access to my registration list, but I think we're at about 12 cars right now. A few are not 968s, but that's okay, too. One 911 is driving all the way from Florida for the weekend's festivities. If you haven't done so already, book those hotel rooms along the way now. Pretty much everyone who has signed up has indicated they're doing the rafting on Saturday. I need to know this for sure from everyone by June 29 at the latest, so those who haven't sent me their registrations, please get them in now.
