i did the math. at $65 a month, and it taking him about 1.5 hrs each week, and 4.2 weeks per month, he's working for about $10 per hour. i can't even get a decent bottle of wine for $10. no chance i'm wasting my time on something like that.

LOL!

I have a Craftsman self-propelled walk-behind with a 21" deck. Moving to a .5 acre property that has MUCH more lawn, too much for the walk-behind. Trying to do the math and figure what makes sense, like how long would it be before a $2,000 mower paid for itself. Probably about 3 years, I'm guessing. I enjoy doing it, but have really no time. Somehow I find it though, at the expense of other important things.

The only rider that makes sense for me is a zero-turn, because there are lots of mature trees at the new property. 42" deck would be fine, but it has to be very low maintenance. Really low. I need that time to work on the 968!

I'm with Flash. Not only don't I want to cut grass, did it as a kid with a small biz but also in high school and part of college for a landscaper, but somehow my time must be more valuable. I do t discount the lazy factor, but there are other things I'd rather do. Such as pulling off my rear view mirror or scratching my hood by leaving the wipers up when I go to open the hood!

We're on an acre property, and about 1/2 of that is wooded. Our Snapper riding mower takes me about 30 minutes, and then trimming with the weedwacker another 10. Lots of trees and bushes to trim around..

My son uses a self propelled Toro weekly, or should I say weakly?

Problem is, he doesn't move anything. I've been preaching it for years but its not getting through. He has hit and damaged down spout extensions, garden hoses even the curb, which cost us a new blade.

Perhaps i should downgrade him to one of those two wheeled human powered push mowers.

I had to use one of those "two wheeled / human propelled" mowers while growing up in Brazil. That is a form of "child abuse"!!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/whine.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

It's not child abuse. It's learning the value of working with your back compared to your feet. When I was a kid with a small grass cutting biz one of my clients was a little old lady. She insisted I use a push mower. It wasn't a big yard but she was a pain in the ass. I finally dumped her and stuck with gas mowers.

Just crawl on a big old mower and drive it like you stole it.

I bought a zero turn last summer. Love it but I keep tearing the grass up doing 180s. What a blast!

When I was an adolescent I also had a client who was an older lady ( they now call them MILFs ) who similarly insisted that I push more. II advised her that I mow lawns, paint the house, etc but " don't do widows " . Did I say widows ? Meant windows. Freudian slip . Parrump-pum. :-)

Right now I'm mowing my own with a self propelled Toro. I go back and forth with hiring this out. I pay for awhile, then realize there not doing it the way I want or when it needs it. So I go back to doing it myself.

Not that different than working on the 968. There is no way I can justify the time I spend on it, but I want to do it my way.

I will give my 968 to anyone that can get my wife to mow a lawn.

DS she was a one of those real old grandmothers blue hair old print dress cheap as hell. Not a suitable gild not milf for a young hot blooded teenager. No mrs. Robinson. Get your knee replaced early summer. That's how I got Liz to take the garbage out. Again misdirection and perhaps a little pity!

I bought a grasshopper last year, sounds crazy but all of a sudden cutting the grass has become fun.

Our local Home Depot (aka "Grown-Ups Toy Store") had 50% off tillers, mowers, and one Ariens 46" 20hp riding tractor mower. It had already been marked down $200, and the manager gave me the discount off of the lowest price. After applying a gift card, I paid less than $500 for a sweet tractor that will make the cutting fly.

Here is is:

Did I get a good deal?
