My mechanic said my disti looked OK when I asked him to take a look at it on the last service, however, it has the yellow sequence sticker, would that mean it is still the original in there (with some 100K miles on the car)? If so I should probably think of doing this little job.. (great write up, by the way)

Thanks for the positive feedback.

One thing I didn't mention in the DIY is that the cost of the cap and rotor was about $50 each.
Interesting thing I found out is that since they are available directly from Bosch, as well as through Porsche, Sunset (generally the best option for Porsche parts) did not have the best price in this case. I got mine at Pelican for a lot less ($100 with free shipping).

Writing up a DIY is pretty easy if you remember to have your camera with you when you do the procedure.
I would really appreciate if someone would write up a DIY for replacing brake pads or a coolant flush.
They may be simple procedures, but I've never done them and pictures would really help.

Excellent DIY write up Jamie. I wasn't familiar with Pelican but a quick google search lead me to Autohaus Arizona sometime ago. I also recently replaced my cap & rotor & just for comparison it was under $90 shipping for the pair. Wish I had your write up before I started!!! Thanks again.

I too recently did the Distributor Cap and Rotor while changing the belts. Mine did not go so smoothly. The very first bolt I tried to remove was frozen and I applied too much torque and snapped the threaded part off in the magnesium housing. I was lucky and there was enough of the bolt sticking out I had something to grab onto. I put the sheared bolt into a vise and heated up the magnesium housing with a propane torch careful not to get too hot or set the mag on fire. I also used a bit of penetrating oil to assist. We (I had help) eventually manged to get it out and replace with new one.

Left to my own devices I would have botched this up big and imagine it would have been tough finding a new mag housing. By my self I would have first sheared off too close to do anything, lost patience and drilled or hammered on it only to eventually launch across the the room.
Thanks for the help guys.

So lesson: be care removing the three screws, if they feel funny when coming out stop and proceed with caution.

1) My airbox 'feet' just sit in a groove the radiator top bar. they do not 'attach' in any way. Really, they are soft hollow rubber feet, not broken.

2) The twist off cover screws. Looks like yours have a slot for screwdriver. Mine have a linear grip for your fingers

3) I don;t have the two gloves imprinted on my cover.

4) I don't have the passenger side support bracket for the airbox.....and looking at the mounting, I don't think it was ever there.

Thanks for the info. I have a 94 968 with roughly 55K miles. When should the cap and rotor be changed? Does it also depend on the age of the vehicle or is it strictly based on mileage?

Do these look like the right part #s? I am on Rock Auto Parts and they have pricing under $100 for the set.

Cap: BOSCH Part # 03213
Rotor: BOSCH Part # 04185

Thanks

Are the 3 spacers threaded or do they slip over the bolts to attach the rotor?

For what it's worth the cap and rotor are also used on the Volvo 740 and there are some non-Bosch substitutions.

The cap, for example: STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # GB434T - $23.

The Bosch is better but Standard makes decent stuff. Since the 928S4 has two of these caps and rotors I have been known to look for a cheaper alternative to save a few bucks. They do last a long, long time at least.

Brian,
If I remember correctly, they were threaded.
I have a nice blow-up picture of the spacer that I was going to attach here, but I can't seem to figure out how to upload it.

Does anyone know if something has changed with the picture uploading procedures?

Daydreamer,
I'm glad the write-up was helpful.
I owed you one from the shortcut you gave me on the door handle seal replacement last year.
