Repaint... different color??
#1

Well, sometime in the future, I will most likely get my car repainted. I know the easiest and least expensive way is to get the same color done. But, I'm not so sure I like the color I have with respect to some other colors.

Has anyone ever had their 968 repainted a different color? If so, could you share some of your experiences? I am assuming, to do it right, that most everything needs to be stripped from the car. But I am not sure.

Don't get me wrong- I love to color of my car, but depending upon prevailing factors, I may change it!

tough to do and not look weird - like you say, most everything has to come off of the car - it's very hard to mask and not leave lines or overspray that bleeds all over the previous color

mismatched engine bays are a personal pet peeve of mine too - probably too many years of "shooting it black"

you can expect about 8k for a decent color change

Yeah, I kinda figured to do it right would mean to remove everything. Not so sure I want to go down that path, but I'll cross that bridge when get to it. I would be willing to gut the interior- not difficult, just time consuming. Removing mechanical stuff doesn't interest me too much, except for the easy stuff (lights, rocker panels, windows, etc.).

I also realize that the value of the car would sink, but like I said, there are some colors out there that I just can't take my eye off.... Speed yellow used to be one, but I think I am over that. I'm really liking the Mexico Blue found on the anniversary 996's a couple of years back. I also really like the Vesuvio color that was available on the 993- just a stunning color. I think the Vesuvio would look absolutely amazing with a deviated black / classic gray interior.

I agree about the engine bay and the areas which become exposed when you open a door or trunk- mismatched looks BAD!

Basically, I'm just yapping. Who knows what I'll do! - I certainly don't!

lol - yeah - it's funny how our thoughts on colors change over the years

if there were an easy way to change mine, i might - while i love the midnight blue metallic when it's clean, i long for the ease of polar silver

I agree, Mexico blue is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! You could also go Gulf blue with orange stripe/accent. Two colors that I've been thinking of doing.

Of course you'd also have to add a suede dash as well!!!

The best way IMO over here in the UK, is to strip the car totally and have it acid dipped, it is the neutralised

and the dipped into some electro-magnetic bath to prevent corrosion, this way you save on prep cost's around 2k GBP's plus the car has all the crud and rust removed in the process. well worth doing if you are going to do it right. then the sprayer has a blank canvas as such to work on.

I had my car repainted a different color, although close. The car was originally black and I had it repainted Basalt Black. It looks terrific and the color is what I wanted. You have to think about original vs not, but you also need to think about what looks good from your perspective. Personally I believe if you repaint it is ok, as long as you paint it a Porsche color if you ever plan to sell it or if you hope to have the value increase.

Even though the colors were so close that around some of the finer edges you might never have noticed, I had the car stripped. Only the hood and trunk deck lid were ground down to metal, everything else was painted over the original color. The interior was not removed, to paint the floor, etc, but all of the doors, panels, fenders, etc were removed. Plan on replacing all of the body gaskets, trunk seal, and badges too. To do it right it should cost $6-10k.

Here are some pics, good luck.

I'm currently undergoing a respray/refurb here int he Uk on my 968CS. The colour has changed from Grand Prix white to Carrara white, quite a noticeable difference.

Documented in part on 968uk.com

http://www.porsche968uk.co.uk/phpbb/viewto...asc&start=0

I have gone beyond a respray and ended up taking a great deal of the running gear off the car, and interior, and gearbox, and torsion tube and the list goes on. Every bush on the car has been replaced with bearing/solid/rose joint except for the ARB's which are going to be polybushed. Even replaced the bushes at the end of the torsion with the polybronze items.

Back to the respray, i have stripped the doors back to a carcass, front and rear PU's are off and completely taken apart, headlamp units out, all glass out - you will see fromt he photos on the above link the extreme i went to.

Respraying any car properly is a big job, there is a great deal to take off, you then end up refurbing some/all what you remove which isn't being painted. The 968's in particular have a great deal of componenets that ideally need to be painted if the colour is to change; door handles, mirrors, roof side trims, 2 pieces of side trim each side, wheels/centre caps if a CS like mine (8x wheels, 12x centre caps!) rear spolier (plus an additional 3 pieces if like me you have the trim done in the same colour as well).

My car has had door closes done, the 'trunk' space, rear cage, rear of seats (bucket seats), all four wheel arches, underside of bonnet, and most of the rear underside. I did not go as far as the engine bay - it would have added too much cost to the bill. In hindsight i should have had the car completely stripped and then dipped as Pazzer mentioned - i would have had in effect a 'new' shell, could have changed the colour completely, had limited underseal re-applied and perhaps even left the carpets out all together (it is used a great deal on track)

I have spent a small fortune having this work done, i have spent c£1.5k on replacing every seal on the body, fixings, replating, refinishing etc - it adds up.

It is a 'nice' idea changing the colour of a car, but you better have deep pockets.

For what it worth from me, I would not change the color. As for the blues I kinda like the blue horizon metalic.

I figured it would be somewhat insane to paint a completely different color, but then you never know! I probably wouldn't pick a different color just due to the increased cost and incredible amount of prep work, but when the time comes....

My car is going in for a paint job in the next week or so, and I'm going the Basalt Black route (the car currently is black).

Well, "next week" turned out to be about a month later. Here's what the car looked like a couple of hours ago. All horizontal surfaces were stripped, some have received the first primer layer. I'm not having the hood and trunk undersides repainted, and the new Basalt Black will stop at the internal edges of the trunk and hood. Door jambs will get new color, as will the interior surfaces of the doors.

[Hmmm, doesn't seem to be taking photos. I'll have to try again later.]

It looks pretty "amazing" right now. DJ was glad that I didn't freak out when I saw the car yesterday. For some reason I can't seem to include any photos in a post, but I will be keeping them for my history. When we get together - which, at this point will be in August after the car is done - I can show you the "in process" photos. Of course, you'll see the final result in person.

Ooops, I was just successful with a photo, so here's one view.

Are you also doing your 3rd light mod, or has that been abandoned or shelved?

Seeing your car in that state makes me queasy- especially knowing that I will need to do it at some point!

The third light modification is still in discussion with the body shop. It's a little more complicated than I'd expected, so we're discussing the "how" and the "how much".

Anchorman,

I think its time to organize a fun run around your "new" 968...this time you pick the date so we can all see the finished product. I'm very busy these days, but would love to see "the gang"

Well, the (to me, regrettable) decision to not make the third brake light conversion has been made. If I can find a thin LED light bar of some sort, this'll be revisited.

So far, I'm very pleased with the shop that is doing the repaint. I'll know much more by later next week, when the job should be done.

Thanks for the invite, Jay. Let me look at the calendar and make some suggestions. It'd be nice to get together and let folks see my "new" car.

Bio, I'll be in touch about a dinner date.
