Recommended Shops in Silicon Valley, CA?
#1

Saw the post about Modderman and will check them out.

Are there any other shops in Silicon Valley that people here would recommend?

There is a guy on San Carlos Avenue in San Jose who is pretty knowledgeable about a variety of vehicles. I took my Boxster and my 500SL there (both after the dealers had screwed them up) and he was able to fix them.

He's located at:

Imports Auto Service

1585 W San Carlos St

San Jose, CA 95126

(408) 998-1151

The place looks like a third world repair shop, and I avoided it for years. But the owner's (his name is Ho) knowledge specifically about my 500SL impressed me enough to take the Boxster there.

I didn't have the 968 in San Jose.

He was honest enough to say he couldn't fix it if he couldn't--and he stood behind his work too.

Mark at Sportech in Cambell - highly recommended by me.

I went to him for a PPI and he diagnosed the pinion bearing issue on the car. That's relatively specialized knowledge. . . Spent extra time diagnosing it and only charged me the hour.

1460 White Oaks Rd # E

Campbell, CA 95008

(408) 377-8055

he also had plenty of 911's around the shop.

I have been taking all of my cars to Fremont Foreign Auto. He does all makes but specializes in European cars. He seems to do a lot of 944's for some reason. I stopped by his shop today and he had quite a few Porsches in there this week. A 996 needing a drive axle repair. Also some 944's in the rear.

I'm looking for machine work on my recent purchase of a '92 cab.

Ted at http://www.germanprecisioninc.com/ (North San Jose) seems very knowledgeable and friendly. He also directed me to Jay at "Jays Precision" in Santa Clara to get the block sleeved...

If you don't mind me asking, how much does this shop charge an hour? There are some jobs being done on my cars that I don't think warrant the amount of hours I'm being charged. A guy in Seattle who takes care of my S6 up there does excellent work and charges way less for a large amount of work. Looking for a cheaper shop down here.

a year ago it was $90. That seems to be on the lower end of the going rate round here. Dealers charge something like $150 an hour. (!)

Joe,

Thank you for the info. I like saving money. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I recently purchased a 968 and joined this forum. I thought I'd add my findings to this old post for future buyers. I felt the best resource for local shop knowledge was the PCA, and the golden gate club has a list:

http://www.pca-ggr.org/localmech.cgi

Their site is going down next month however, if they don't find a webmaster. I had created a text document of the south bay sites from this larger list, I've added it below.

I chose the first one on the list, to help me evaluate my car's brake issue. Chris at C.T. drove the car without an appointment with me to troubleshoot it, and visually inspected the brakes from through the wheels. He gave me a free recommendation. I haven't followed up on it yet, (he stated the car was safe, as long as I give the other cars on the road a bit more space) but his recommendation sounded reasonable to me. Not too many shops will do that in this area, IMHexperience.

I met the owner, Tony, and he's a success story, so I expect he'll stand behind his work. I'll be giving them my future repair work for a better evaluation.

If anyone else has personal experience, good or bad, with the shops on this list, please post for the benefit of the rest of us.

Cheers!

the attachment didn't show up, so I've cut and pasted the list into this post:
