Re ring Pistons
#1

I lost a rod bearing and con rod early this year and unfortunately this has required a complete tear down of the motor. I had not planned to replace the piston rings because the engine was strong before the failure. The problem is the damaged con rod and crank went to the machine shop to be checked and the rings have been removed. Does anyone know if you can re ring the pistons without machining the holes?

how does the wall look?

it can be done, but not recommended - i'd hone it at a bare minimum

on most motors, if the wear is minimal, you can get away with just honing - a measurement of the cylinder will tell you

if you've got the motor apart though, why not finish the job? - you'll be a lot happier in the end - you've already spent the labor

The new rings won't seat correctly and thus not achieve an optimal seal. It's just like you can't install new brake pads without turning the rotors and expect to get full stopping power.

Hopefully the machine shop is familiar with the Porsche 3.0L.

I kind of thought it was the case and with the cylinder treatment it complicates things because standard honing is not possible I hope the machine shop has the original set of rings or I will be parting with s bucket load of cash to machine the cylinders and install new pistons.

I just broke the cylinder glaze and installed the new set of standard rings, $150 or so for a set ....from Paragon. Check the end gap and go, this is a asuming the cylinders are not scored etc and round.
