When got this '93 968 the A/C did not work; the compressor looks to be a reman as it is painted black (other factory ones I have seen are "as cast alum."). Through the threads in this section and the 944 FSM I was able to find out that the clutch coil was an open circuit.
I did some research but could not find one cheaper than going through Sunset. Following the FSM. I R&R'ed the coil and made sure to put the retaining rings back on correctly (August 2012). The idler bearing did seem a bit sluggish but was still tight. I made a mental note to pick one up with one of my next orders. A/C worked great. Until...
One day in October I had a very strange experience on my way home with some 968 based clunking noises I had never heard before they changed with engine speed not vehicle speed. I thought the alternator was falling apart.
Upon dis-assembly of the front serp. belt found the following:

It seems the coil retaining rivet was sheared and the coil started spinning once the wires broke free.
Any other takes on this failure are welcome as I would prefer to weigh all of the ideas...I am really not looking to spend $140 every few months I would like A/C ;-)
Thanks!
