Yeah, we're pretty far down the list at 14.7s. Jeez, that sounds so snail-slow by today's standards. But with either the D1R supercharger, or the right assortment of intake mod, headers and chip from RS Barn, and some judicious lightening, and I'm sure we could come close to the 944 Turbo S's time of 13.9s.

When I gave up power boating for sailing my old stinkpot friends would challenge me to a race...I said "Sure....to England"

968s simply were not made for 1/4 mile races...

Not sure what the ultimate effect of the supercharger, or the RS chip, or any other mods might have on a q-mile run, but with the racer X chip, the air box mod, the BB catback , some 50+ lbs lighter from getting rid of the spare tire and anvil-weight of the OE catbcak..and a fresh head rebuilt to boot, I'm consistently outrunning mid-2000s Carrera 4 which are listed at 13.8 sec, so I have to guess my Q mile time has to be in the mid 13s. Still slow as a slug by modern standards but faster than most $ 75,000+ cars, so no complaints

I hope to take about 150 lb out of mine, plus hopefully get a few hp back thanks to the rebuild I'm in the process of; I'd be happy to stop getting left in the dust by Toyota Spyders on the straights...[Image: ohmy.gif]

Toyota Spyders? I think a Toyota Avalon might dust me in a straight line...!

My 968 has been in the shop for the past two weeks and my insurance rental is a 2011 Toyota Sienna Van. The really discusting aspect of this is that it has a 6 speed automatic with a sport(shift it yourself)mode. So I thought I would see just how fast the thing really is. I pulled it down into first and went WOT and I've got to say it took off like a scalded dog. I ran it through the gears shifting at about 500 rpm below readline where it seems to run out of breath. I suspect that it would have taken my 968 off the line and probably held me at bay until I shifted the 968 into 3rd gear, afterwhich it would have been no contest. Otherwise the van is a pig and it does take a lot of torque to move all of that weight around.

It seems to me the weight given to the 0-60 time is so monumental in this country, it is not only arguably the biggest component of a car's marketing campaign, but it affects the engineering criteria where all the focus is placed on that one factor with performance beoynd that point as a distant secondary consideration, if not completely ignored. The 968s were never designed that way, and Chris is right, once you're in third you soon catch up and leave behind cars which might even be more than a second faster up to 60.. and at 80 the majority simply conk out.. especially the Japanese cars ( ok, GTR is the exception ) where you can be catapulted to 60 or 70 and then while still floored it suddendly feels as if someone grabbed your foot and lifted it off the gas pedal

0-60 is the biggest part of 1/4 mile times - don't confuse rolling runs with 1/4 mile - you may sit even with or even outrun a car on the freeway, but it can still kick your butt in the 1/4 - a carrera 4 will stomp you in the 1/4, as it has 4 wheel drive and launches like a shot, while your tires are just spinning - once they are both rolling, in a roll-on run, the advantage will go to the car with the least drivetrain loss and weight to horsepower ratio, which would be the 968

given that stock is 14.7, i would guess that your 968 would do about 14.2 or 14.3 at best - it takes a lot to make a car go faster in the 1/4, and almost all of it is hook-up and low end torque, neither of which the 968 has much of

but, we can do a timed run - i have a G-Tech and a Dynolicious that can both easily record 1/4 mile times

As we're casually rolling through Maryland on the way home, a speed yellow vette goes blasting by us on the right, loud as Judgement Day and doing 100+ until he gets to the line of traffic just ahead and has to hit the brakes hard. Of course there's a Mustang trying to keep up with him and he has to brake even sooner...

My wife looks over and says... "douchebags".

Hmm, I can't argue with that point.. I have NEVER raced against another car ( with the 968 ) from a stand still, it's always been rolling runs starting from may be as low 10-15 mph, but every single time I tried an all-out take off ( on my own ) from a dead stop just to see how it does, I never seem to get the right clutch release and avoid either a tire spin, or conversely overcompensate and delay the start so I can definitely see how I could lose seconds screwing around until I get it right.

Very funny Jay, unless you rented a mid 80s Vette, or, you're towing an RV trailer behind the one you're driving, I'll need a lot more drinks than the tasting at four wineries to take that bet..

it's very easy to lose a half second or more in a 1/4 mile dash with wheel spin alone - hookup is everything - 4 wheel or all wheel drive really helps here, but then it costs once the car is rolling - it really hurts when torque isn't up to peak - so, rolling on from low speeds will make that car seem slow - after that, once both cars are moving well, it comes down to aerodynamics and hp to weight

as for how to launch a 968, try a clutch dump at about 2500 - rev and hold to 2500, just move your foot off the pedal VERY quickly, and floor it the instant your foot comes off - don't let the rpms drop

Isn't that rough on the clutch?

yes - still, it's the best way to get a good launch for a 1/4 mile run - nobody ever said that trying to get a good time was less than hard on the car

the other thing in getting a good 1/4 mile time is not to lift the foot off the gas when shifting, and slamming the gear shift as fast as you can in one quick move (not 3)

Gotta love the powershift... At least it's easier to change the clutch in the 968 than it was in the 951. My dad's 65 Goat would go sideways when he did that. Can't think the dual mass flywheel would like said technique.

I think I'll stick to sedate launches and road courses. Nothing like a well matched down shift and balancing the car through the corner with the throttle. It's slow in a straight line, yep. Don't care. I love the way it feels, and drives. That's why I haven't sold it yet even after buying a 996tt. Now that car can launch, but it's pig heavy too.

I agree with Joel,

I love diving into curves and corners with momentum, never intended to beat anyone out of the hole and have been embarrassed on a few occasions. I ran my Miata against another 968 (who shall remain nameless) and had no trouble keeping up to a MPH which may or may not have exceeded the posted limit (but certainly less than 156 MPH).

I love my car for what it is...
