Porsche may revive the 914
#1

Here are some articles that discuss the possibility and related things.

Porsche Gets Nostalgic for the 914 and Four-Bangers

VW to build mid-engine coupe and roadster ‘halo’ sports car

Porsche may add four-cylinder engines to 911

I am sure that Porsche got the idea of a 4-banger from us 968 owners .

I like the 914, owned one for a day once (long story). Always thought a 914 with a 911 engine and beefed up suspension would be one of the coolest rides......

A "new" 914 could be great.

At 6'3" I can't exactly fit in an old 914.

Were people shorter in the 70's?

I have also heard reports stating Porsche will build a 4 cyl again.

It was also rumored that it will be a 4cyl boxer engine which eventually will be turboed.

Oh noooooo...........Take it from a guy who owned a 914/6. I bought it new in April of 1970 and sold it not quite a year latter. They will have to go a long way improving that POS before I'd ever own another one. Take an old guys word for it. You have in your garage the best 4 banger ever made. I know I sure feel that way and I still have one of the original 4's

I owned, drove and loved a 914 for about five years. Mine was a '71 1.7L with Appearance Group, finished in choclolate brown. That's probably not the official Porsche color name but it looked exactly the color of a bar of Hershey's milk chocolate. I loved that car and never should have sold it. That's a very long story with which I will not bore you.

It was terribly under-powered but it drove like a dream. I've always lusted after a 914-6 and almost bought one a couple of times. A '73 2.0L four-banger would be second choice but still a very nice car, although the 914-6 has better brakes and suspension, too, in addition to the additional power.

In theory, the 986 Boxster IS a modern update and successor to the 914. Is there room for even more nostaglia and another retro-car? Surely. I'd love to see it--maybe even drive it.

Bob, that would be a great thread! Interesting cars you've owned but never driven, sat in or taken possession of... Lol, I've owned the red cab for over a year and put only 300 miles on it!

I think the current demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles will drive the development of a new generation of very interesting, and desirable, lightweight "pure" sports cars, which I whole-heartedly applaud. I'd take a Lotus Elise over a bloated Nissan 350Z any day, for example. As purely a matter of personal taste, though, I hope Porsche (and VW) don't draw any inspiration for the new car's styling from the original 914, as I've always thought that car was pretty homely. Can't wait to see how this turns out, though.

Maybe we will get lucky and Porsche will re-bore the 968 engine to 3.2L shove it in a mini Panamera coupe and we will have a rightful successor to the 968.

What would they call it though?

I got it!

i actually liked the 914, though it was certainly full of shortcomings - never liked the looks of the front, but loved the rear - loved the targa - hated the rear fender arch - the smaller engined cars sucked, but the 2.0 was fun - the 6 cylinder was a blast
