Polishing the engine
#1

Ok, how the heck are you guys polishing the metal like what I've seen?

I'm refering to the camcover/intake manifold and such.

Do you just get some metal cleaner and a huge bucket of elbow grease?

Start with 80 grit sand paper and work your way to 3500. Then polish with rouge.

Or sand with 220 and paint.

Or send it out for PC.

I like the polished look a bit better than painted. Once polished how do you keep it looking good? Coating of some kind?

Is the annual clean just the rouge and a buff or do you need to go back to the paper?

Thanks, It would be easy to send it off and PC it or even paint it myself. But, for me it is rewarding to know I DID IT.

In fact NO one see's it other than myself. I have no car friends. The last time anyone other than RSB has seen it, was at Hershey last year.

BTW, be prepared to lose your finger prints should someone attempt this.

When I did it, I bought a used manifold so I could minimize down time.

Some of it can be done with a palm sander but most was done by hand.

Started with 80 grit (the surface has a very rough finish) and went from there. Only $25 in supply's. Some of it had lying around.

I have no idea how many hours. A couple here, a couple there.

I would not like to do it again.

Wait. So you sandpapered it and it ended up that shiny? Or did you sandpaper it then chrome?

Aluminum will polish down, as will stainless steel, just a lot more work due to the rough cast surface.

My experience as well,

Brian
