taking the yellow out of the engine bay
#1

Flash and I were talking about how we both think that Porsche really didn't have to make the oil dipstick and oil cap out of "screaming" yellow plastic.
The custom oil caps on the market have way too much "bling" for our tastes.

I decided to prep, prime and paint both parts and took them to black.
You decide.

That engine is simply too clean - the car needs to be driven much, much, more.

I have an owners manual that helps me. Thank God for the pictures!

The strut is from KLA in 2005, before Flash made his bar.

Brian, you're going to force me to do more cleaning. My car is at about 170k miles, was my daily driver until last year when my wife insisted I get a winter car - so I now drive a PT Cruiser in lousy weather, the 968 other times (but I no longer put the winter tires on it). Anyway, back to the point, spring is coming so I'll strive to make my engine look like yours.

Anchorman,

I got auto socks to use when it snows and run the 16's in the winter. Worked out great, both last winter and this one; which was pretty bad for Seattle. The only problem is that the chemical that they use for a de-icer has weakened the zinc plating on my discs causing rust. As soon as I get a spare weekend I have to pull the wheels, prep and paint with some exterior silver paint.

Thanks for the compliment.

Looks pretty good. I'll probably end up doing the same thing. Of course, there is the billet aluminum cap but in spite of how nice it looks I just can't bring myself to pay $ 100 for it on principle alone, because after all it's only a friggin CAP ! And then I'd still be left with a yellow dipstick handle I'll have to paint silver to match the cap. Black all around seems to be the logical choice.

Oh and BTW, I could live with the screaming yellow if the brilliant minds at Porsche would have only thought of NOT using the most absorbent , impossible-to-clean texture plastic known to science for a couple of items that are continuously exposed to filthy, greasy, oily hands .

went to Home Depot yesterday, and today my oil cap and dipstick handle are also black looks better than yellow, IMO. thanks for the idea Brian !
btw, while there I noticed they have a spray which dries into a vinyl / rubber coat - I did not buy it, but keep thinking it might put a nice finishing touch on those things, although I wonder if the engine bay is too warm and casue that vinyl to melt ?

I have the "bling" cap. I too wasn't satisfied with the yellow so I want all out for the expensive option. I don't mind spending money on 968 goodies after all there aren't many. Will have to paint the dip stick silver to complement. I also have new PORSCHE letters to install. I did a sloppy job with the ones I have on now so I bought another set. They are green to match the Adventurine Green color. Warm weather come soon. Although I do have an invite from Darryl for his heated garage.

and now, with black oil cap and stick handle, there's a bit more conformity to the color scheme. silver, blue and black. i added caps ( from M030 ) to the strut tower tops, a nicely "finished" look IMO, and since I have enough bling on that engine anyway ( crest decal, 968 logo, the cam cover vinyl letters, yada yada ) taking away the two yellow accents toned down the bling factor, but only a little bit.. You might consider the rear plastic engine compartment cover. It covers up all of the clutter at the back of the engine bay(cruise control stuff, cables).
VERY clean engine. How did you get it so bright?

Dan,

You would be surprised how warm it can get in there. Probably way too hot on the exhaust side.

yeah, i bought the front cover, did not think to get the back one also but probably will at some point ..

i really do not do all that much to keep it clean, I think I washed once in the last five years and maybe every six months I dust off the plastic & rubber parts with a rag soaked in 303 protectant

i did not go with the vinyl cover for the oil cap, just left it painted

Beautiful engine compartment, can't wait to see it in a couple of weeks.

Thanks guys, I did not expect the engine to remain this clean at 100k miles ( 99,382 mi ) considering how little effort I put into keeping it that way, but it probably helps that the car is garaged most of the time with a cover over it as well, no driving in the rain, or mud, or driving offroad on dusty trails ( intentionally, anyway ) so that's the reward I suppose..

Given the above do we expect that the paint will stick or start to chip? I have painted some plastic bits (in applications other than the car) and found that your typical Krylon type spray paint doesn't stick very well.

Looks great Dan.

Stays clean if you keep it clean.
Mine has almost 140K miles and looks great with little effort.

If you need a rear cover let me know I have 2 of them.
