BAD Swirl on Wife's VW EOS, Not Coming Out?
#1

I bought the whole kit from Adam's a few weeks ago, the (non-Flex) Porter Cable polisher, Severe Swirl Remover, Swirl Remover, Buttery Wax, the bucket, etc.

Some yahoo did the "happy dance" all over my wife's car after we bought it (and before we took delivery) and it's swirled as bad as I've ever seen a paint job. Navy blue to boot.

I used the polisher and the Severe Swirl Remover (after watching the DVD) and it took some of it out for sure, but there's still plenty of it there. It's not visible scratches you can feel with your fingernail, and it's not visible indoors or on a cloudy day, it's just extremely visible in bright sunlight.

Do I hit it again with the Severe Swirl Remover? The DVD makes it look easy, but this stuff is more art than science.

You should probably choose an inconspicuous area and go through the whole process -- severe then regular -- until you don't have more swirls in that area. That will give you an idea of what you should be doing for the whole car.

I'll try - not sure if I can photograph such a thing, but it's worth a shot.

You could always just give him a call...Darryl is a great guy, and an excellent resource...and an Adam's distributor.

Too agressive and you're thru the clear coat. Then you're screwed.

I met Darryl and purchased my car through him at last year's Detail Day. For some reason I always hesitate to call someone up and avail myself of their expertise directly, maybe because it happens to me all the time, e.g. "My PC is acting funny, can you look at it for a second?...". Thank goodness I'm not a doctor, or it would be "Does this look infected?..."

I try very hard not to call flash about things, unless they're D1R parts, and even then I feel like I'm imposing when I do.

gbarrier, that's a good point. Unfortunately Guard's Red doesn't have clear coat, it's just a primary coat of paint, so too deep and you're into the white primer. And equally screwed. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Not directly related to the topic, but I agree - I'm always hesitant to take up someone's valuable time asking for free advice in their area of expertise. Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. Heck, it even bothers my conscience to go to a car dealership and "kick the tires," much less go for a test drive, unless I'm serioously considering buying the car.

I'm happy to impart my knowledge to anyone on this board with a Federal A-E contract question, otherwise it's just opinion about color selection, wine, etc...

I've done a bit of detailing work. No mention of the pad you are using. Should be an orange pad, which has some grit. Don't worry, with the porter cable, you won't cut though the clear. Put a lot of pressure on the machine, almost to the point of bogging it down on highest setting 6. Work in an 18x18 area. might take a couple of times. I'm not familiar with Adams products, I use menzerna stuff with great success. Keep in mind too, that aggressive polishes will create a haze so you have to follow it with a finer polish using a white pad. As long as the swirls didn't cut through the clear it should come out.

Pm me if you want more help

Federal Acquisition Regulations related to Subpart 36.6 - Architect-Engineer Services. In short, government acquisition with the application of the Davis Bacon Act statutory limitations as interpreted through DoD (USACE, NAVFAC, etc) General Services Administration, and the Intelligence Community (NGA, NSA, etc.).

Thanks for the info. I just assumed since everything these days is base / clear that all our colors are too. I have always assumed that my white 93 is base / clear. I painted the spoiler base / clear and think I see a little clear peel near the seal on the sunroof. Of course I painted the lower plastic trim with single stage and can't tell the difference. The whole car could be a repaint but no evidence.

Tama I suppose I understand your retiecense but since we're on the forum isn't that the purpose. I'm corrupted because people come to me or when they meet or talk to me I always get D&A questions. So it doesn't really bother me too much. If you ever spent any time with Flash I don't think you would feel the same way. Bob don't shoot me now! Jay is right about Darryl. I peppered him with questions at Newtown and he turned me on to Adams products. May is a little bit more difficult to understand but that's because he works fer da govt and if he really told you he would have to kill you! Lol

I'm OK with posting a general question to the forum, and if someone with particular expertise in that area responds, all the better. I do hope Darryl will chime in with some kind of "pro tip" or tell me what I'm doing wrong.

But (using Darryl as our example), calling him directly to ask questions about something he makes a living at is not something I tend to do.

I've spoken with flash on several occasions, and he was *extremely* helpful and patient when explaining that my balance shaft belts were, as he had intimated, out of whack - and that had nothing to do with his parts or products. And I suppose it had nothing to do with how he makes his living, really, but hopefully by now you know what I mean. In my mind, peoples' time is precious and I don't want to be "that guy" that adds just one more thing onto someone's plate because I've got a question.

Grasshopper. Life is a two way street. Expand your consciousness and realize it all equals out. And when you think it doesn't just realize you have helped someone else. Now please I need to get off the soapbox because not only do I sound stupid but it's making me retch!

Sorry, just catching this thread now. Been a little busy with one black swirly car after another. For you Facebook users, check out my page there.

Tama.....Congrats on the kit purchase. I hope you remembered to use the 968forums code at checkout. The Adam's Severe Swirl Remover (SSR) on the color coded Green Pad will probably not remove all of the swirls. That may sound contradictory, but remember, it is a multi-step process just like sanding a piece or wood or metal. A more severe grit must be followed by a less sever grit and so on. As suggested prior, work a 2x2 section. Keep track of the number of passes you make. Then, once you determine what it's going to take, then you can apply this process to the entire car. Remember a "pass" is working the polish until it "flashes" - which means it will turn almost clear. That's one pass. SSR will leave a little haze which could easily be mistaken for remaining swirls. Move on to the orange Swirl and Haze Remover (SHR) and finally the White with Fine Machine Polish (FMP). As for pressure, the Porter Cable likes to see about 9-14lbs of pressure and machine itself weighs about 5 lbs, so you're not pressing super hard. You will hear the motor change pitch but you don't want to make it stop moving completely.

The videos and DVDs do a pretty good job but also keep in mind that Dylan and Adam do this all the time and do indeed make it look a little easier than it actually is. Please feel free to give me a call. Send pics as well. I'll do my best to help remotely.

Darryl,

Thank you very much for chiming in. I'm on a mountain in Montana at the moment, but I'll try your advice next week, time allowing. I did use the code, thank you! Too bad I forgot to order the 5-gallon bucket of patience this detail work takes. :/
