Pictures of Failed Pinion Bearing
#21

I bought my '92 with a failed bearing just a few months ago. I found a used transmission for a grand and had it installed at a buddy's transmission shop for $350. So, $1350 and back on the road. I've driven about 2,000 miles since, and no problems so far. I guess you take a bit of a chance with a used transmission but I trusted the guy I bought it from on the mileage and condition. I thought about rebuilding mine at a cost of $2,000 but decided to take the gamble, and spend the difference on other needed repairs. I figure if this one goes out (hopefully 90% chance it won't?), I'll rebuild it with LSD.

 • HI Guys,
 • Im having trouble trying to do a search on the site
 • I am looking for Pete's right hand man, I believe his name is Max. I just started to notice the pinnion bearing going and I had spoke to Pete regarding this issue and he strongly suggested to have Max to repair it rather than a local shop.
Thank You

Max is awesome, he has my highest recommendation. No one else touches my 968.

Blue968, you may want to consider catellus engineering in Stow, MA. Kevin Gross gets good reviews and he is close to you. I know Max didn't want to rebuild my trans because of time and available parts. I highly recommend Max, but it at least gives you another option if he doesn't want to do the rebuild.

I had mine done in Holly Hill, Florida. Under $3k and a two year warranty.

I bought the car with the failure - I didn't know it until after I had it running and driveable..the car was so loud, there was no way you could have left it alone. The car had sat for 5 years between when the bearing failed and when I bought it, so many of the bearing surfaces rusted since they were not under the transaxle fluid level.

I had an option for a used transaxle, and $650 to remove and install it, but I would have had no warranty..I went with the rebuild. I didn't feel like having a used unit fail at speed. Plus with the rebuild, my car stays numbers matching. Not a big deal to some, more important to others.

I found some info here - http://members.rennlist.org/martin/

This is the guy who did mine - I was very satisfied...http://precisiontransmissioninc.com/

HI Guys,

Sorry for late response my computer died, they say things happen in 3's HAHA

Thank you for all the info.

I pulled the tranny and couldn't believe how easy it was, however I did have a tranny jack.

My bearing is not bad, hardly noticeable but rather have it done now before more damage is done. Its a shame because this car only has 18K on it, perhaps it failed from sitting to long????

Thanks again guys will update on results and cost.

Sitting really had nothing to do with it...there were problems with the way the bearings were installed at the factory. Time really is not the issue.
