Plans for future cab...
#1

So, my overall plan right now is to get myself into a 968 cab in the very near future. Fate of my coupe is somewhat undetermined at this point, but I know I will be seriously upside down in it no matter what. That's OK - lessons learned and all that good stuff - as long as I end up with a cab that meets my currently better-educated standards.

In anticipation of the cab, I have begun (or will begin) amassing various little tidbits that I would eventually install on the cab:

1) OEM front splitter- had it on the coupe already, would just need to repaint it in the appropriate color

2) OEM black boxster/996 4 spoke steering wheel (interior of future cab will be black)

3) OEM side molding pieces- I saw these in person on Anchorman's cab, and I love them. Will just need to paint to match.

4) Stainless steel trim rings for the gauges. Eric S had these on his 968 cab and I like them.

5) Iceshark battery cable kit (with headlight kit to follow)

6) "Rightclick" keyless entry system- pretty cool. Similar to Bulldog system, but has the "switchblade" style fobs to accept Porsche key blanks. I'll have more details on this in another thread.

7) Soon to get stainless steel shift knob insert- have one on the coupe and I love it.

8) Soon to get stainless steel sill covers- saw them on Anchor's cab as well, and I love them.

9) Window express- have it on the coupe now and well worth the effort of install as far as I am concerned.

10) RSBarn Stage I chip - in coupe now, will be removed for installation into cab.

11) Upper and lower braces from RSBarn/Design1 - in coupe now, will be removed for installation into cab.

12) Home-made airbox mount bits and pieces - followed Greimann's concept for my coupe, and will do it on the cab.

13) RSBarn SS exhaust tip - it's "da bomb" - really finishes the rear view of the car, just enough bling to look awesome.

14) RSBarn/Stuttgart shift block - have one on the coupe and will eventually get one for the cab - one of the best low-cost upgrades in my opinion.

15) ... I am sure there is more, but you gotta start somewhere, no?!

Nothing like buying stuff for a car you don't even own yet! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I suppose if I never get a cab and decide to keep the coupe, I can just install everything on it...

Might want to get that Porsche Crested so that the "branding" mark you get on your palm from the heated metal will seem like a tattoo, instead of just a 6 speed pattern.

Go for the whole cat-back, it's worth it !

+1, the difference in a Cab is night and Day !

Definately M030 Sways...

Lots more possibilities.... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

yeah - don't do the stainless knob - very painful experience to set your hand down on that in a cab that has been sitting in the sun - been there, fried that - ouch!

You just have to get a little knit bonnet for the stainless knob, or just use a sock. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Easy fellas- it's a stainless steel shift knob INSERT - not the whole knob. No issues with burning my hand. My coupe has a rootwood 993 knob with the stainless steel insert right now. The rootwood knob gets toasty, sort of, but I use sun shades in the front window and door windows, so it's never unbearable.

You pansies!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

lol - have you ever had a ragtop? i have had them for 30 years now, and you learn a few things along the way, unfortunately often at the cost of skin

i used to have a metal insert in one of my MGBs - BIG mistake! - left a nice logo burn for about 2 weeks - i wasn't even here in LA yet, where it gets a lot hotter - black is bad enough - metal resulted in second degree burns - you could toss something over it when you get out, if you could remember to do that - the first time you singe yourself though, you'll be cussing yourself out

black seats are another big bummer - i have those now in the M3 - i begged ayn not to go for the black, but you know how that goes - when momma wants something, she gets it - the other day she hopped in wearing shorts - HA HA - seared the backs of her legs a bit - there are a couple of tricks that will help that one though - either throw a towel over the seats when you get out, or at least put the seat backs forward

good luck

I have a dark grey daily driver with a full black interior now. Not much of a problem.

I don't anticipate leaving the top down when I am not in the car. Maybe once in awhile or so, but I'd be too paranoid parking it somewhere with the top down- bird poop, punks with gum, etc. I'm pretty religious about my window shades (specifically because I already have a black interior) so I have accepted the extra 60-75 seconds required to install them. I'll have to learn to close the top when I leave the car.

If not, I'll proudly wear the burn, I mean badge or honor of a 6spd shift pattern on my palm! Besides, I normally grab my knob ( <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ) from the side to start- force of habit.

No matter what you nay-sayers say, I will get the insert again! Screw y'all!!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

P.S. I think I am starting to like the emoticons too much for my own good...

Just remember that in the 968 Cab you are suppose to be running with the boot on the top when it's down. So it's not as simple as hitting the button to put the top up when you park. And if your smart the top will be in manual mode.

yup

it still amazes me, given the price of the car, at the things where they shortchanged us - even a $13k mustang had a full power top and a heated rear glass window

Ahh, but, my friend, a mustang is not a Porsche... (must admit I do a have a soft spot for the new Saleen Parnelli Jones edition Mustang GT)

Seeing as how most folks I hear comments from run their tops in manual mode, I would aspire to do the same so as to prevent possible damage to the bow.

All this, at least for me, is speculative anyway- I still don't own a cab yet!!!! But I'm chomping at the bit for sure!

lol - funny how people feel about that - the fact that the 968 was a porsche was a big negative to me when i was shopping for the replacement to my mgb - i almost did not buy it for that reason - as it is, i have had to do a ridiculous amount of work to get it near the level of that car

but, i am not a mustang fan either, and was only pointing out that some things that should be "givens" were conspicuously absent on the 968

A little OT, but what is the actual reason for running with the boot on? I've driven for years without the boot, and I've seen no ill effects (but I don't really know what ill effects to look for). I use the boot on long hauls, but around town I just push the top down and go. When I park and run inside someplace for a few minutes, I just pull the top up, but don't lock it down.

yup - the headliner absorbs all the gunk in the air and starts smelling pretty quickly - also it fades when exposed
