Pinion bearing questions
#21

Thanks - the number on the side of your boxes matches the one Sunset found for me, so that's promising, and it's good that they're available in the US.

Ok the bearing next to the box may or may not be the right one for that box - the posting got screwed up and added the bearing photo to the last post

here are both sides of the next box

Hope that all helps...

Thanks. I called my machinist, but unfortunately he doesn't work on transmissions, but he recommended someone who is a certified Porsche mechanic, so I gave him a call. He's very familiar with the 968 pinion bearing problem, and has replaced them in the past, and he sounds like a very good guy, so I've at least found a promising local resource. He reiterated ruling out other possible causes for the noise, such as a wheel bearing, before tearing into the transaxle, which of course I wholeheartedly agree with.

Great - I wish you luck. Mine was not the jet engine sound that everyone talks about - It was a real loud screaming sound - it could be heard all the way down the road louder than the car's exhaust...I think if you look on the forums here, someone actually made a recording of theirs. Mine sounded nothing like that one.

Yeah, it's kind of hard to describe the sound, and when I was driving it, I didn't have proof of insurance, or my registration or inspection stickers, so I had to drive very conservatively, meaning I wasn't able to see how the sound varied under all the conditions people have recommended over the years. It's quite loud - maybe not quite like a jet engine, but definitely a metallic noise coming from the back of the car.

Yea, mine was loud. Really loud. As soon as you got over 15 or 20 mph it was all you could hear. The wife was following me and when we got home she said, "When you started out, I was wondering what the problem was, but then when you sped up I knew."

As soon as my transmission guy got in it and drove for about 1000 feet, he said, 'Yea that's what it is." and turned right around after two blocks as he said he didn't want to tear it up.

That really sucks Cloud. I'm kind of in the same boat. I have 1 pinion whiny tranny on the garage floor and the one in the car is starting to grind (synchro) when shifting to 2nd unless slow shift. Reminds me of the 911 915 tranny. Will it ever end? Crap!

At least you have a spare you can get rebuilt.

I would rather tackle this myself if possible <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/glare.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

There was a thread started by a guy named wez about a year-and-a-half ago who did his own trans rebuild, but he didn't post any details, and very few pictures, and then he vanished. I've IM'd him, but haven't gotten a response, and have also looked for the same name on R.L., but no luck. A google search turned up nothing as well. This does look like a very difficult and risky job - I think it would be well suited to having an expert mentor you on it, but tackling it with just the WSM really looks like a tall order.

A warranty is a glorious thing! That was one of the big reasons why I went where I did.

Well, suddenly, I'm a little less sure I have a pinion bearing problem. I tried my little experiment of jacking up the rear of the car, and having someone "drive" it while I listened underneath. There are definitely noises coming from the transaxle (not a peep from the wheel bearings, though), but I'm not sure they're not normal. Whatever this sound is, it's much more noticeable inside the car than outside. My assistant's opinion is that what he was hearing wasn't anything he wouldn't have expected from a car with the interior aft of the seats gutted. He's a major car guy, so I trust his opinion.

So, I next confirmed the trans fluid was fully topped up (it is), put back the rear seat and cargo floor carpet/padding, and took it for a drive (it feels SO good to be able to finally say that). My reasoning was that everybody who has identified a pinion bearing problem has done it in a car with the interior fully intact, so I wanted to hear how it sounded in this "normal" condition. There is something that starts at about 35-40 mph, but I wouldn't say it sounds like a jet. It's more like a whistling sound a vacuum leak would make, and it even has some similarity to my car's shifter buzz, which I also always thought sounds like a vacuum leak, as odd as that may sound. Also, the sound level doesn't increase as I drive faster - I got it up to 80, and this particular sound is no louder than it is at 40. In fact, as road and wind noise increase, the SFKAPBD (Sound Formerly Known As Pinion Bearing Doom) becomes less noticeable, to the point that I can barely hear it. Also, the sound doesn't change in pitch or level as I let off the gas, or when I accelerate, which I thought was a characteristic of a pinion bearing issue. To tell you the truth, if I hadn't noticed it when the rear seat and cargo padding were out, and if the radio were working, I would never have noticed this particular sound.

I know it sounds like I'm trying to talk myself out of believing I need to have my pinion bearing replaced, but the symptoms don't seem to line up with the classic ones I've read about. Any ideas as to what else might make the type of whooshing sound from the back of the car that I'm hearing?

U-joints or c-v joints? What ever is back there?...

Wheel bearings, which you say you ruled out...

Exhaust issues?

Front end issues and you are only hearing it behind you...

Tire noise?

Don't know, I'm stumped...

BTW...glad you are safe after the car lift!

I rebuilt the CV joints, so I assume they're OK. It's a new cat back exhaust, and it sounds like I would expect it to (which is to say, badass!). There's definitely tire noise, but I would have expected it to get steadily louder as speed increased. It's just so odd that it sounds like a whistling noise - maybe I have a hatch seal leak or something like that.

Could be.. - are your windows sealing tight?

clutch?

just don't know...The pinion noise was just loud on mine - not jet engine whine, just loud....

Did the sound on yours get louder the faster you drove it? Mine is quiet until about 35 mph, when I start hearing it (though I'm seriously wondering if this whole thing may be a figment of my imagination...), and it stays steady as I go faster, actually getting drowned out by the wind and tire noise.

I can't really remember - I want to say it was constant. It was so loud it was just unbearable.

If I recall correctly, it just got loud and stayed there until I slowed down to stop.
