Oil pressure gauge and water temp gauge positions
#1

Hi chaps,my oil gauge is showing the positions in the pictures hot at 2000rpm and at idle are these ok for a normal engine in good condition.

Also the position of the water temp gauge when normal hot running.

The car is running fine but now the weather is warming the electric fan is always running for a while after the engine is shut down.

Picture 1 is the position of the temp gauge, norm or not?

Picture 2 is oil pressure at 2000rpm

picture 3 is oil pressure at idle.

The oil pressure gauge looks normal for a hot engine. While the temperature gauge looks about where it should be when the fans should kick in. If it always hovers around the top line (100c) I would think there is a problem. It should be between between the two lines for the most part (between 80 - 100). Mine is usually around 85 - 90 for normal driving... and hotter if I drive the car hard. But then again Vancouver isn't too hot durring the spring, and the ambiant temperature is about 16 - 18c on average. I'll take some videos of where my gauges are today (I'll have access to a camcorder

Oil Pressure looks OK.

Temp look high to me. Mine runs at the lower white line when getting good air flow. Fans kick in at first white line plus a needle width. Only time mine went as high as in your picture was when the water pump was going out.

Does the needle drop when you turn on the AC? How much?

Are both fans on?

I agree, all the gauges look right exept the H2O temp (unles you were sitting there idle for awhile then it's probably normal.

With my car at temp the gauges are as such...

Temp (center-seldom goes higher)

Fuel (empty- )

RPM (at 70mph in 4th-3100, about 900 at idle)

Oil (4.5bar off idle, 2-3bar at idle)

Volts (center (13?) all the time)

Finally made it home heh, ok, here is that video of my gauges. This was driving on the highway.

http://www.renalicious.com/Videos/968gauges.avi (divx 6), it has also been "de shaked" so you can better see what's going on

Sorry Renalicious could not open the video my old com and still on dial up.

Anyway gave the car another fast drive and the needle is still going to about the same position.

This time on shutting down the engine the high speed fan ran for a while then the slow speed or just one if that makes sence.

Let it cool down and thought I would check the rad, it is a new one fitted before I had the car, hum.

Next I checked the water pump for circulation faults by the return in the header tank, plenty of flow all ok.

Since I have had the car it has not used any water.

Could it be possible for the temp gauge to read wrong through a faulty sensor and if so does the same sensor run the fans.

No air con fitted but if I put the heater from cold to hot the temp goes down just a bit for a short while.

The weather is getting on the hot side about 27c.

Thanks for your help and suggestons,

winger

does the temp fluctuate quite a bit ? if so I'd change the thermostat

I was having the same temp readings as you, after i changed it

the guage barely goes above the first line.

good luck

Thanks Doster, that makes sence, why did I not think of that.

here in the Uk we have Euro Parts, rang them up and could not believe the price, they want to clear the stock £1-12p for the thermostat and gasket, I ordered two, postage £2-00.

Forgot to ask on the front brake pads and discs as i have a growl on the N/S front?

Will put a new topic on the antifreeze types to use?

Doster, it sounds like you have the low temp thermostat like I do if it hovers on the bottom line pretty much non-stop.

I agree with others, those gauges look fine at speed. The temp may go up a bit when you stop (mostly after a spirited ride ) also the temp going down some with the AC is normal (the cooling fans come with the AC).

Changing the T-stat is never a bad idea (pita but worth the peace of mind).

Had a go today at changing the thermostat.

Took the top rad mounting plate off so it made it easier to remove the circlip that holds the thermostat in place.

Picture 1 new fitted.

picture 2 Found this sort of circlip pliers were best.

Job done and I am still not sure on the type of antifreeze at the mo so refilled with the old and bled the system, finally topping up with distilled water.

The colour of the antifreeze was blue.

Now to test the car Wow the difference! Thanks chaps, the engine before was water heated and oil cooled!

Picture 3 A cruising shot on the test track of course!

Picture 4 After the run,hot idle : low temp.

Picture 5 hot running at 2000 rpm.

Note the better oil pressure now.

Any hot running shown on the gauge must be delt with straght away, in my case the small cost of the thermostat has saved what could have been a very expensive out come if not attended to, thanks again .

That is what my gauges look like. Nice job.

I use the orange colored coolant. I believe that it is phosphate free.

The mix is 50/50 with distilled water.

I like your definition of "Cruising".

Mine also hovers right at the 1st thin bar. When I'm on it pass 4000RPM for a wile it rises just a hair above that bar. My gauge has never made it dead center.

Just returned from a day at Brooklands with another type of 50's car,Used it on the old Test Hill and had some respectical times.

Next time it will be with the 968 on the Mercedes world test trac,k that will be a thrill!

Ref the thermostat seal.

Used the same rubber seal as it was ok, the new thermost was not supplied with one.

Also the stainless washer was used again on top of the seal, located by the circlip.

Thermostat had 82c stamped on it.
