Octane
#41

In Belgium, 95 en 98 RON are most common. Shell did offer 100 RON also, but I think they gave up on that.

People sometimes claim that cars which can run on both 95 and 98 RON, would run a bit more fuel efficient with 98 than with 95. So more km/L. Could this be true?

Off course, if true, the money you potentially save would be nullified by the higher prices at the pump for the 98 RON.

it really depends on the car. if the car is retarding timing due to the lower octane, then you would have less power, which could then force you to step on the gas harder to accelerate. that could cost fuel.

as an example, my denali gets about a mile per gallon better on 91 than on 87. more importantly though, i gain about 25hp. normally this is not an issue, and i run 87. however, if i am towing, i'll bump it up.
