Interesting article on favorite oil
#21

it's enough that I already use orange coolant, hell, if I start using green oil too, then I'll need yellow polka dot power steering fluid, blue transmission oil and winshield wiper fluid which turns fluorescent when it hits the ground , just so it's easier to tell what's leaking

did not want to start a new thread, and searched for one where this issue might relevant, but after search produced about a million and one threads on "oil" , I just picked one at random so here it goes : saw a comment on another thread today, though can't remember which one and who posted it, which indicated that after switching from Mobil 1 to another oil, the car burns a lot less oil.

+ 1 on that experience. I switched from Mobil 1 to Amsoil about four years ago and whereas I was burning about 1 quart every 500 miles on Mobil, it's been, consistently, less than half of that burn

rate now.. after about 1,000 mi I need maybe 2/3 of a quart refill..

not sure what relevance this has to engine performance or longevity, or if it makes any difference whatsoever, but thought I'd second that comment

do NOT use royal purple - it is a chlorine added oil that breaks down extremely fast - i have seen the results of a double blind laboratory comparison test, and while it does show initial power improvements, it thins out extremely fast and fails very quickly - i know of engines that have failed purely due to its use

Sorry to hear that. As RP is the most significant gain then anything else I have ever tried. I wonder if you can blend it with Castrol or something and get the best of both worlds?

Just put amsoil20-50 in the boosted 3.0 951, about a week ago. My specialist swears by it. Used to carry redline, but they swithced to amsoil few years ago now. Its a fresh motor, with new rings, with about 3k on em. Im getting a little smoke out the pipe, I think the synthetic is lubricating a little too well for now. Need to put the break in oil back in, and put a few more miles on it I think. Although its smoking less, and less the more I drive it. It wasnt much smoke to begin with. Im keeping an eye on it, and if it dont clear up completely, back to valvoline VR1. No smoke at all when running VR1.

the reason RP does so well is that it thins out so quickly - it fails at a relatively low temp, and well below that which is regularly seen on the track - i got to see this myself not long ago - not pretty

redline for me for now, but amsoil is really good too

just to share an experience.

with LIQUID -MOLY oils from Gernmany.

Been using 10-60 racing oil without any problem for years

including a 24 hours international endurance event on my

Turbo ,albeit with a 25 row mocal oil cooler ,in dec 2006.

Recently i have experimented with the same grade ,moly

but for high reving bikes in the 968.It is red ,gets dark very

quickly like LP AND REDLINE,and after a couple of high speed laps on the circuit

it starts to smoke. But,the engine feels more powerfull and willing to rev

in comparison of using car oil same grade in the same car.

. Have couple of theories, but i would like to hear some 2nd

opinion. Please dont advise me to take 2 quarts and call you in the morning.

Isn't that dangerous? Was the smoke heavy and dark?

I've always used Mobil 1 in the 968. On a side note, when switching to synthetic on the Toyota SUV gas mileage improved about 8% (from 14.5 to 15.5). Since then, I only use synthetic.

plus 1.

Changing from mineral to synthetic on new Japanese cars ,definetedly will improve milage, due to reduction in friction

and the tighter tolerances in reciprocating parts.

Used Mobil 1 also in the 951 and 968 ,15-50 w but it is no longer available in our part of the world except 0-40w that the new Porsches use, tried it once and needed 1

LITRE every 500 km topup, plus both engines sprung oil leaks, where there were none before,

Also the use of 0-40 w commercial oil in 50 degrees centigrade ambient,is of questinable advise from Porsche.

Could it be that their service dept not been very busy and could use few engine rebuilts once the warranty runs out?

Here we have frequent failures amongst Boxters ,Boxter S and curiously amongst Cayennes Turbos,

The Chayennes N/Adont seem to be affected ,other than their crank pulleys become undone and taking the whole

valve gear south with them, petty much like the belt failures of our 968.
