Performance Cams
#1

Performance camshafts for these cars are available from a couple of sources - JME and Webcamshafts.

The camshafts are reground to improve lift and duration. Michael Mount can also weld in an adjustable cam gear in order to vary the intake/exhaust cam timing. In NA cars, you can get some serious power increases using race type cams. In fact, around 400hp in an NA engine combined with ITBs, exhaust, porting, etc.

You don't hear much real world experience with these cams on supercharged engines, although I know Dubai944 runs a fairly wild cam setup on his supercharged 968/S2 hybrid engine.

I have a spare head and was looking to build a performance cylinder head over the next year, including some mild porting.

Anybody got any real world results in terms of power increase? As this is a track car, power/torque below 4500rpm is not really an issue.

Cheers

Eric

that's because it doesn't make nearly the same amount of difference. messing with cams is primarily to alter the overlap and valve lift and duration, so as to increase the charge cycle, and get more air in there. this is automatically done by forcing air in there with the supercharger.

yes, at the edge of the envelope, you can get a little bit of help from higher lift cams, but increasing overlap hurts. increased duration can lead to detonation.

Most performance cams (eg webCams) have less than zero overlap for the 944. Increased exhaust and intake duration still has an effect of increasing power - especially at high revs. Being able to adjust the exhaust cam timing independant from intake is also beneficial.

not so much effect of lift and duration on forced induction, especially at low boost. you're cramming in a lot more with the blower than you can with a cam. i'm not saying it can't add to the equation, but it's just not as much of a difference on a boosted engine than a non-boosted one. most people just add more boost, rather than mess with that.

adjustability though could easily become a cool way to fiddle and tweak at the edge of the envelope. we have that now, and it does make a difference.
