Pablos Daytona Victories
#1

Pablo is back from Daytona with a clean sweep in PCA Sprint and Enduro races.

Four race wins with 2 Sprint and a 90 minute and 180 minute Enduro wins.

Car was unloaded late last night and deserves a rest after a Kick _ss season of wins .

Pictures and Videos after P Crespo gets back to normal after travel and work.

Huge effort by all to get car prepared to combat some big $$ entries.

Just shows how competetive 968's can be after 20 years of age and a few

years of development.

Absolutely incredible, and a testament to your know-how on these cars, and Pablo's driving skill. But you're being way too modest with your assessment of these being 20-year-old cars - their basic design dates back to the mid 70's!

Congrads, So how like this year running at the PCA events?

I want to do Daytona one of these years, just a long pull from Chicago. Just glad to get back out on the track this year for 2 race weekends and not having to spend all winter this year building a new car :-)

Nice article, looks like car set up and strategy played a key role in the victories.

it would be interesting to see what kinds of cars and setups he was up against, and give it all some context

What are the bonnet vents - where can I get some?

Well done on the results and it is an awesome looking weapon. Like a 968 has been going to the gym and taking steriods (no Lance Armstrong jokes/references please).

Is this car running suspension pots for data? Be very curious if there was any before and after data in regards to the diffuser? Also ‘seemed’ like in those pics that the wing had been mounted at different heights. Either this is just my poor eyesight or they discovered different effective heights or were told to lower it due to Series rules? We have rules down here that restricts the location of the rear wing so perhaps that is the case.

Bonnet vents are from Hi-Flow Louvers (Part: LNAHF) from www.hoodlouvers.com

No suspension Pots. In fact, I had never ran any data acquisition in the car until Daytona when we ran AJ Hartman Racing's AIM Solo. Unfortunately, I don't have hard data for the diffuser. Just driver data Wing was lowered a bit at Daytona after arrival, then taken off, then put back on at the lowest setting with 0 degrees not counting the gurney or flow direction through the hatchback so there was plenty of downforce trimmed out at 0 from ground level. The front canards were also removed.

Crespo - you are a legend. I have been looking for something like this for ages. Did you bolt yours in or weld them? I am assuning that the fit a standard hood or are you running a fibreglass one?

One again - thanks heaps.

LOL! I wish, the legends all seem to have Australian accents!!!

We riveted mine on the factory standard hood. They work great and kool down the engine bay considerably. I dont have actual temp differentials but know it just from touching the intake manifold before and after the louvers where put on. Theoretically they should aslo be relieving any built high pressure that should assist downforce from my setup... This part I could not really "notice" with my old school Buttometer though.....

Thanks for that info Crespo. So you ran as little drag to increase top speed. Do you know how much of an improvement you got?

Its hard to say because the bus-stop (chicane) was key to the terminal speed before T1. So we worked hard on improving our entry-mid but especially exit speed in there and kept improving it throughout the weekend and as we tweaked suspension settings so we never had data JUST with/without aero tweaks. Nonetheless, I would say that 5 MPH is a likely ballpark figure. My wing is very efficient. Nonetheless, without it, we probably would have gained on the banking and following straight, but would have been offset by carrying less speed through and out of the bus-stop. Our entry speeds into it where close to 90 mph and exiting in the same range. So at those speeds the rear downforce does make a difference.

The data showed we lost time without the wing overall, and the car was much harder to drive. It could have possibly been faster with enough time to tweak the mechanical grip, but there was just not enough time to test. And since we, above all, wanted to keep it in one piece being our first time there literally learning the track, we felt that having a settled race car would gain us much more in lap times from driver confidence and exit speeds, that what we gave up from drag. With more time we would have tested more without the wing but we simply did not have that much track time as I was also trying to get my Enduro co-driver to get comfortable after only having driven the car for a few sessions in practice a few months before the event.

To top it off we also had our share of problems that included a water hose bursting as a result of fan blades rubbing, a broken splitter after a brief off by my co-driver, air/fuel issues due to available fuel, etc..... Busy weekend!

Some of the "Ugly"... Courtesy of a tricky, very fast, treacherous Chicane... Mistakes here almost always ended in heavy contact either with the inside wall or outside banking wall.

But we put our heads down and got it done with 3 minutes to spare after 3 hours non-stop.... From the underside it truly looks like the Frankenstein Splitter... I have to take some pics of it! Multiple length and width wide heavy duty stitching!
