Pablo's 968 Racer
#1

Hi,

The 968 Racer I have been working to complete, with much help from Pete and Max at RS Barn, is finally battle ready. It has been a hard six months. From the day I removed the first door panel screw, to the many weekends of carpet glue and insulation removal, to now as I write this, much effort has yielded what I trust to be a competitive 968 racecar. While targeting NASA GTS Challenge, the car should see some action in EMRA races as well. Maybe PCA if the opportunity is right.

The first outing was a week ago on Sunday at a Pocono North NASA Open Track day. The car was simply great out of the box. Truly an outstanding setup by Pete that shined from the first lap of the first session (in 17 degree temps). Neutral, easy to drive fast, forgiving, and quite honestly, faster than I thought given the totally stock engine with only an RS Barn chip, airbox mod, and RS Barn cat-back. The folks at NASA were super, and everyone sicerely liked the car with nothing but great feedback all day.

This weekend I took the opportunity to go back to Pocono North, but this time for a regular DE with our friendly NNJR PCA peeps. 7 sessions total with the car again running flawlessly. I had a little problem with my HotLap timer so I do not have official times but from the videos I just started to download, and to my el grande surprise, I actually think I am running 1:01s when I get a clean lap! I initially thought 1:04s to 1:05s would have been a great time for the car in current trim, so I am still in shock. Definitely an absolute uncontested testament to Pete as the mastermind builder/tuner behind it. And I am certain, it is the car, not the driver <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> .

Dyno and weight specs should come soon. We (with a little help from budget restraints) have focused on suspension, safety, and durability first. Additional weight saving mods, brake upgrades, and engine tricks are forthcoming. As you all know, and I am quickly learning (the hard way), a race car is, and will always be, a work in progress. And don't even mention the slippery slope. It does not exists. It is not a slope. It is a %$#@*$ CLIFF.

I find it difficult to post multiple pictures and videos in forum platforms so I have setup a cardomain.com profile. Please visit Pablo's 968 Racer in CarDomain.com and check it out. When I figure out how to reduce the videos from 500 to 100 meg, I will post some in-car vids.

I am a little compulsive sometimes, and actually signed the car up as a candidate for the Grassroots/NASA/Hankook 2008 2nd Annual Ultimate Track Car Challenge to take place at Buttonwillow sometime in the beginning of June. We'll see, but IMHO, it would be absolutely awesome to have a 968 representing in the GRM UTCC. I am still trying to convince Pete to sponsor an additional 50 HP and ride west with me if surprisingly the car was selected from the pool of so many ultra trick Evos and S2000s in the 4-cyl categories.

All in all, I sincerely hope you like the car. Thank you in advance for taking the time to check it out. As always, and especially from this 968forums.com crowd, all feedback is very much welcomed and valued.

Lastly, my most sincere public thank you to Pete for everything he has done. To me he is a friend, driving instructor/coach, car builder, tuner, and reality check extraordinaire. Patient and with my best interest always in the forefront. Also, thank you Max for spending many Saturdays and Sundays helping me when I needed.

Looks great! You should have a lot of fun with it. A well taken care of, mostly stock drivetrain should give you years of reliable service. As you have already seen it will surprise people too.

I don't know how many times I've had this conversation with racers at the track who have never seen a 968.

Them: So what is this? a 94...., a 92....

Me: It's a 968.

Them: Ohhhh (looking puzzled). So its got a V8?

Me: No, it's...

Them: Oh, its a six cylinder. I get it 9 SIX 8, right?

Me: No, it's...

Them: Oh, its a turbo!

Me: No, it's a normally aspirated 4 cylinder.

Them: Huh? 4 cylinder? You must have really worked it over.

Me: No, its stock and never been opened or out of the car. But it is 3 liters...

Them: A 3 liter 4 cylinder? Damn. (scratches head)

I don't think half of them believe me.

Buttonwillow would be a looong tow for you, but that would be cool to see.

Thanks Smokiemon! I will look into the Summit Point schedule. I also have to find an easy way to post a schedule somewhere......

Thank you Eric! You and your 968 have always been an inspiration.... great stuff you are doing in that northwest region.

LOL! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Your script is right on! This weekend my head was so big with all the props, pics, and people just walking around the car. From GT-3 owners to the hard core 914 racers... it was truly kool... I now need to work myself up to the car standards.

I think you should also throw your car in for UTCC. I don't care if it is mine or someone elses. It would rock (and be beneficial to all 968 owners) to have a well prepared car show what 968 are all about in a track environment, in an event fully covered by the media that will provide tons of exposure. Plus it should prove to be lots of fun. Last year I believe they had that one 924 "Frakencar" (with a 968 engine in it).

Cheers! And thanks again.

Pablo, the car looked great out on track this past weekend with NNJR! I was kind of sad to be there with out my 968. It is great to see more of these cars out on the track. I was running tower out of the van by pit-out all weekend so I was unable to find you during the weekend. Sorry about the splitter <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I wanted to stop over and check out the car a little more. How were the stock calipers on your car? What bias valve are you running?

Another inspiring 968!

If I had a buck for every time I've had this exact same conversation I'd have enough to buy a set of tires!

Nice job on the car Pablo. I look forward to seeing it at the track!

Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate the kind words.

Working at the tower.... so THAT's what you guy were doing there in that Van!? Uhm.. sure you were... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Hope to see you next time indeed. The car worked well and you guys worked to make it an awesome event as always. Yeah, excellent design... we just need to make it double as thick... the people behind me are still looking for me with the knee breaking team.... You guys do a great job out there... outside of the initial Black Flag shock, it was good you guys caught it and brought me in... LOL.. I tan with half the splitter and undertray the rest of the event <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thanks Jim... I look forward to meeting you at the track soon. I am still unsure as to what class I may run but likely it will be GTS3. I need to find abt 40 ponies and get the car down in weight a bit more to get to that 11 w/p sweet spot. Nevertheless, this will only ensure I will not be getting my butt kicked up and down by you in GTS2 but rather getting it kicked by all the GTS3 peeps as there are so many great drivers there as well.

Indeed Mark. The wheels have been a great hit and they made a huge difference once they went on. I have to thank the guys up in Salt Lake for the lead on them. They where the pioneers (I think) in using the wheel in their Firehawks. The one offsets is not ideal but we can work around it easily.

I thought the offsets were OK, 8.5" 50mm and 10" 60mm? I had a set of Enkei on my S2000 and yours felt nice and light when I checked them out.

Wow really nice looking car! How much does it weigh now? How long did it take you to strip the insulation and which method did you use?

Your front to rear spring rate is way different though, any reason?

I think he still has the torsion bars, so the rear rate is not as far off as it appears.

Mark, the offsets are ok but they are in a bit too far on the rear setup. I am getting just a little rub under heavy load at the track.

Eric is correct. I still have the torsion bars in the rear. The combo has worked well so far. Maybe later this year I'll make the transition and eliminate the torsion bars. We are running springs on the softer side for now while I put in seat time at the track with the new car. A little more forgiving. Also works better in bumpy tracks. Pocono North has that big bump on the 100+ mph Turn 1 coming off the NASCAR Turn 2 (Bowl). Also 5 going into the bowl is all messed up as well.

Don't know how much weight I have taken off. I'll find out soon but I do not think I am down too low yet. Still have the glass hatch, qtr windows, all steel body, light assemblies, and a few other things that have yet to come off. If I was to guesstimate, I would say 2,700 or so.

The dismantling and insulation removal was not too bad. I had most of it in a weekend with some help from Max doing the heavy pulling. The glue removal is a completely different story and a true honest nightmare. It took many, many weekends of using every concoction we could come up with and test. From simple green, to industrial strength glue removers, to gasoline, to mixes thereof. Max did a lot of the heavy lifting there as I gave up fairly quickly. I am certain he killed at least 30% of his brain cells and lungs breathing the stuff. I talked to a lot of people but I could not find anyone to tackle the job anywhere. I tried hard.

The cage builder, Kalani Gohara, uses a torch and a couple rags with gasoline and a few other tricks. I am personally amazed at how he has not blown himself out of this earth, but he ended up taking off a lot of it. If I was to do it again, I would just take it to him and pay the well worth extra $$$ for the glue removal. Just stay a few miles away from him while he works it.

D'oh silly me. Reading through that late last night I didn't see 'Pending' in your list of mods and only saw Torsion bar delete. That's why I thought they were out of whack. It's actually a bit of a formula to figure out your effective wheel rate in concert with the T-bars in, but what size T-bars are you running?

As for the removal of insulation / glue, I have heard of guys using the Dry Ice method too. I agree with you though, find someone prepared to do it and pay them!

I really like those Enkei wheels too.

I have the car setup soft for several reasons. The NE tracks, Pablo and the rear still has rubber.

It still worked well enough to lift a front wheel while driving off a corner.

Don't see that much in these cars.

And I too agree about the conversation script <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Pretty soon we should just carry around business cards with details on the car <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Nice. The blue 996 finally gave you the point by. The infield sure is tight. I look foward to seeing some actual racing.

I have a picture of my car at Pocono, long ago. Maybe I should show it the video and see if it remembers. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Yep, nice going. The car looks nice and balanced too. Thought if anything you were being too courteous to some of those guys giving them right of way, but I get that it's only a DE type of thing.

Well done!
