Pablo's 968 Racer
#21

Thanks! Car is indeed well balanced and covers a lot of my screw-ups.... Gotta be nice with them GT-3s... otherwise they blow by you on the NASCAR straights and never give you a line in the infield.... Most of them are great guys though and return the favors...

I finally got around to post another video from the Pocono weekend... I know... its getting pretty boring... I'll take Sunday's runs and compress them all into one.

But just in case you want to see another Poc North Vid.... There is the one spin in front of me though... by a young lady driver actually... nice, well executed, 360

Oh! The latest update is that I attended Comp School on Tuesday (April 15)! It was awesome. About 14 of us I think. The car rocked again.

We ran the Pocono Long Course using almost the entire NASCAR track with Turns 1 and 2 while bypassing Turn 3 via the North infield. Clockwise so they did use the chicane to slow us down a bit before entering the nicely banked Turn 1 of the tri-oval.

The 68 kept me in front all day in a group of about 4 of us. A fast Boxter, an E36 M3, a nicely put together Cayman S, and a crazee fast tube frame GT racer (I mean cra-Z fast). Cayman and the 68 were 1-2 once the GT dropped out with nose bodywork problems. The Cayman S could pull me on the straights past 100...

So yes, I did pass. There were a few spins, contact, and other "incidents". Not everyone did make it through the class.

I uploaded a few new pics from compschool in Cardomain.

Congratulations Pablo and running the banked turns sounds like a blast as well. I love the bloodshot eyes on the car.

Thanks Guys.... Hopefully I'll have a bit more exciting race videos soon.

LOL... bloodshot eyes reflected the driver's own after arriving at Pocono around 3 AM with barely any sleep in the previous 3 days on an emergent work issue that flared up (I actually had cancelled comp school to be in a plane on my way to the Pacific on Monday, but then plans changed last minute and I showed up at comp school hoping they would take me back.... glad they did...)

That CS looks nice....

Pablo,

Congrat's on you and your car...

Come on down to the Hyperfest at Summit Point June 21-22 and we can show them what a couple of 968's can do on the track...

Hopefully we won't show them how we go off-roading!

Best of luck,

Jason

Thanks Jason. I did see your name in the list for Hyperfest at Summit. I will be there but just laying down some DE rubber on the track so you guys in the race groups can be quicker....

This will be my first time at Summit, and being Hyperfest weekend with full race groups across the board, I did not want to get in over my head at what would have been my second race weekend in my rookie year.... So - you and you alone (from what I can see) will be carrying the 968 flag! Certain we'll see a podium.... no pressure... Let me know if I can be of any help while at the event. More than glad to assist if needed.

My first race weekend will be at Pocono North on May 31 / June 1. I'll be focusing on keeping my nose clean and learning the other 99% you can't capture in comp school.

So I did have my first race weekend on May 31st and June 1st at Pocono raceway using the North Course. Showed up by myself on Friday night all excited but certainly... uhmm... ehhh.. well... nervous as I can be (not that usual with me)... Running NASA GTS3 with a not optimal power to weight at around 12.9 when I should be at around 11 to be in the competitive zone.

Saturday was rainy from the start. Of course, I had no rain tires and no wipers. Just my set of R6s on the 16"s and my R6s on my 18"s. Rain had eased out a bit for the practice session so I decided to go out on my 16s. By the second lap, someone had clipped the flag station into Turn 1 coming off the Nascar banked turn 3 (>100 mph). I came around to the hectic flagger with less hands than flags waving while jumping up and down slow enough to nicely skate my way through 300 yards with absolutely no control as I floated over the oily water to a 5 mph pace somehow managing to keep it on the asphalt. About 8 other cars that were not that lucky were scattered all over the place. By the time practice was over (never did red-flag it), there was oil and water all the way through the infield making it effectively undriveable over 40 mph.

By qualifying, the HPDE peeps had cleaned up somewhat of a dry line and the rain had pretty much subsided for the most part. In about the 6th lap or so I decided I had enough clean track ahead and a good dry line for my money lap. One rookie mistake later I found myself in the same spot where the previous wreck was, not looking far enough down the track, forgetting I was on my 16" "training wheels", and trying to slow down a bit from over 110. A little slide... a bit off the only line at the time on the track, and around I went. Unfortunately, my drifting skills are obviously not very polished and I could not save it. Kept it on the asphalt for the most part.... needless to say.. NOT the money lap. First true spin ever. Somehow I finished the session while unable to breath, blink, or speak, and qualified second.

Race time came quicker than I expected and by the time I looked at the schedule after throwing on the 18"s, I had about 10 minutes to get ready, strapped, and gridded. Between the nerves and excitement, during the warm-up lap I realized I had no idea where the green was going to be thrown. As I am looking for it up high on the banking wall, I happened to hear and see the leader open it up. Well, a 10 cars deficit later, here I am going back into my now least favorite Turn 1. Much contact in the front running group, lots of pieces flying, smoke, and cars sliding. I get through unscratched on the inside as I tried to slow down. Finished the race under a red flag after a top running racer went off at; guess where, Turn 1-2. Started breathing again, and then, proceeded to get scolded for a "questionable pass" under yellow.... I was forgiven as the 2 cars I passed, passed me back, and I had little chance of stopping as the incident unfolded in front of me with cars behind, off-line, and with little room... and not even halfway through the first lap! Somehow, I managed to take 2nd. Very, very, very small trophy..

Sunday was a beautiful day. Pete came up and joined me for the day. Practice was fine. Again qualified 2nd. Pete helped sort out a few suspension annoyances and all sorts of important racing things I had no clue. I was a happy racer. Locked and loaded, obviously "a veteran by now" . As I pulled out Pete asked me for the 15th time if I had enough fuel. Again I said I was absolutely certain. remember, I am a veteran now. Had to keep the weight down. An extra 2 gallons would put me in the back of the pack for sure . Nailed the start this time. Passed a car or two into Turn 1-2 and I was setting on a rhythm. Midway through the race... coming through... you guessed it.... Turn 1 right kink and into right Turn 2 heavy breaking zone, I stand on the brakes as usual, on a decent line (I think), and.. oops... right rear locks up (never happened before - fronts always locks first), car kicks to the right (opposite to turn), try to correct, and around we go. This time a little quicker and more dramatic than my first drift practice. Actually going off for a picnic on the grass. Managed to keep the car on.. so I rolled back onto the track 2 cars in front of the 3rd and 4th GTS3 positions. "Great", I thought, I have some cushion... Well.... for the rest of the race, I did not have enough fuel to not sputter out of Turn 4... By the end of the race I had lost the 2 car cushion (both out of T4 while graciously sputtering), but managed to again, somehow, find 2nd place. "I told you I had enough GAS!!" Did find out that somehow the right rear was loosing air throughout the race as it was flat shortly after the race ended.

Now I understand Jim and Eric. Goodby HPDEs.... Hello Racing! Enough adrenaline and excitement to last a century.... But my two first ever spins really put a check on my ego..... Coming first on both races was a very nice gentleman drivin a fairly trick E36 M3 with about 279 rwhp and right at the 11 power to weight ratio sweet spot for GTS3. About 1 second faster per lap.

A few pics from the weekend.... I'll try to post a few videos soon.... (BTW: Nerves were enough to make me forget to turn the camera on for my first ever race :-( .... oh well... sorry...) I think I do have both spins on tape though....

Thanks Eric! I could not believe the butterflies.... memorable indeed... but simply just AWESOME! Needless to say, the fellow NASA racers were super supportive and cheered me up all through the weekend.. a few went out of their way to actually come over and help me out with pointers, observations, and tons of advice (very funny at times - such as "...when you grow a pair of ___ and are not shy to mix it up and stick a nose in, you'll do even better..." and so forth...).

Mark; I feel that my slippery slope was more like a cliff. Was thinking about it, and it was almost exactly 1 year and 2 weeks from the time I first set foot on a track last year in my Tiptronic 68 at Pocono North to Comp School this year on April 15th. All the credit in the world goes to each and every instructor that bettered my driving (inclusive of Pete).

Mike; I believe the car is at about 2,514 without driver and a 2-3 gallons of fuel. I estimate 2,689 with driver and gear. Still have some more weight reduction to do (bumpers, rear torsion bar, etc.). On a local Dynojet 248 in Newtown we pulled a 207 rwhp (201 Torque) with the 18" Hoosiers on. This is typically a low reading dyno when compared t others (even of same model). This pull was with the higher flowing Throttle Body, RSBarn no cat exhaust sys, and a RSBarn Chip installed. It was running real lean though and now we know we also had a failing head gasket. Nice power and Torque curves though.... Since then we have installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and have burned some new chips to correct the lean condition. Now that the head is coming out to replace the gasket, we will take the opportunity to do a bit of work on it (nothing too fancy), possibly upgrade injectors, and definitely throw in a set of RSBarn spec cams. Those changes along with chip tuning and a few other minor mods should get me to 240 (or close). This will get me much closer to an optimal GTS3 trim. Pete has been working on some pretty awesome setups that are putting some serious power on other engines by tuners he has been working with. That direction maybe for next year. For now, I definitely don't want to go over GTS3 as I am probably over my head there to start! Plus I still need rear suspension and brake upgrades. What weight and power numbers are you running on your car?

Thanks for the kind words Duckman. In reality I feel like it is everyone's project here at the forums as well. Since day one everyone here has been awesome. From the Tiptronic days to today, there has been countless contribution and influences by many. Pete has become a friend, mentor, instructor, and tuner extraordinaire. Flash, through much time researching and developing, and via countless discussions personally and on the phone has been an incredible resource and good friend on the "other coast" and while visiting the East. Eric and JimC have not hesitated to answer PMs and emails on everything racing and 968, while sharing invaluable experience and advice. Most of you have been direct contributors in more than one way. Ultimately, throughout discussions, posts, hanging out at the Barn, meetings, and chats at the track, ALL of you here have had a positive influence and has shaped my venture down this path. So you are part of it!

Great people. Great cars. Great racing. We rock on!

Would love to and have seriously considered it Bill. But I am out in the middle of the Pacific for another two weeks and stiull need to somehow get in three more races with NASA before September so I can qualify for Nationals at Mid-Ohio. We'll see.... have not been there since last August.... I love the track, miss the place... and It would be awesome to hang with you and the rest of the WG regulars....

I'll keep you posted but I may end at Mid-Ohio NASA even in late August if I have the time and not traveling..... can't complain too much though... I am in Kauai now.....

Hope all is well and see you out on track soon.... How's your ride doing?
