Option question M288 headlight washers
#1

Not sure if this is the correct part of the forum to post this question, but does anyone here have or know of a 968 with headlight washers, option M288 ? I've never seen them on a 968, but I'm far from an expert and never looked for them before. I came across a brand new front bumper, part number 944 505 113 03, that was ink stamped EURO and has the headlight washers. I checked and the part number is good for USA production, but there are actually 4 different current part numbers. Two with M288 and two without. I have no idea why there would be four and not just two. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm slowly amassing parts to do a 968 Turbo conversion and just bought two pallets of NOS parts from Europe, many of them euro 968 and 944. This bumper was part of the purchase.

the coral red cab that was for sale in canada a few months ago had them

here's one for your "odd things" list - the bumper cover with washer holes is cheaper than the one wihtout

I have seen a couple of cars in person that have had this option.

Turbo project! Sounds like I need to stop by again!

The turbo project is a long way off and the garage looks the same as the last time you were here <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'm not even sure I would do the conversion on my current car. It is good to know that M288 was a USA option so I can at least hope to sell the bumper.

I have to finish sorting through the boxes, but It looks like I got a lot of standard stuff that I can sell, a lot of useless stuff (15 right rear speaker grills!) that I can't sell, and a few gems that should make the purchase worthwhile if I sell of the stuff I don't need...

I need a new CR-1 radio and/or all the goodies to upgrade to the Hi-Fi speaker and amplifier option. Would you happen to have these items?

Last year I saw a blue coupe with headlight washers on the 5 near Valencia, CA. It was in the early morning traffic headed into LA.

No radio or amp, but I can make you a sweet deal on 15 rear speaker grills...

my car has headlamp washers mounted in the front bumber cover.

what a waste! this car isn't for off roading.

it makes washing and waxing a pain.

if i ever need to repaint the bumber cover, i think i'll have them removed and filled in.

if anyone need's a picture, i'd be happy to provide. not a thing of beauty.

i find this funny - on other cars, i've had to wipe bugs and stuff off the headlights, but not on this one - granted, i don't drive it at night much, but when i have, even when bringing it home from cleveland, i didn't have a problem

maybe there is some reg, like in france where the headlights have to be yellow, that requires washers?

No picture necessary. I agree on the uselessness of the washers. I had a 951 with headlight washers and hated them for the same reasons you mention. Our 400E Mercedes had both washers and wipers for the headlights, how odd and especially useless in California....

Are these unusual? My 968 has them and to tell the truth, I've never even tried using them. It's not like it's difficult to clean the headlights if you get some junk on them, they're right there in the fenders looking up at you!

My car also has seat heaters, I wonder if some part of the production was equipped with these two options together as some sort of 'severe climate' combination ??

Can you get "Bumper Plugs" large enough to cover the holes if the washers were removed. Not ideal, but maybe nicer to look at compared to the washers. (?)

My 1992 Canadian cabriolet has both the washers and the heated seats.

i thought of plugging the holes, but i think that the cleaners look better for now. and who knows when i'll drive through a big mess on the road and need them!

funny, i have heated spray nozzles for my windshield, lamp washers, but not heated seats. i'd love the heated seats since i'm 'up north'

Heated seats and headlight washers on mine too - USA model originally sold in Pennsylvania.

I'll be the first to admit headlight washers aren't that pretty. And while I don't use them that frequently, it's great for periodically ridding fresh bugs when driving across the bug-infested CA Central Valley in the summer - no need to stop and clean; just drive and blast! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> My car is a daily driver so I don't worry as much about getting it dirty.

But I very much want to keep my car as close to original as possible, so I won't ever delete them for that reason.

Best,

Buzz

I saw a 968 cab for sale today on my way to class with the washers. I thought of the forum and took a picture but it seems that the consensus here is that nobody wants to see what they look like. I agree, if you haven't seen them, it's best if you don't. they take the look of the outside of the car back a few years to match the look of the inside.

I've got the washers on my 1994 coupe.

I'm in the process of investigating all of the options on the car. My dad gave me the car because his garage was too full with his truck and his 1993 928 GTS. He wants me to sell it and buy something new like a honda or Scion. I'm not too keen on that idea.

So what's the best way to find out about options on this car? There is an option code decal somewhere, correct?

I had a 944 for 12 years but was never into it enough to become involved in a forum on the internet.

Option code sticker is in the trunk - driver side behind the carpet backing on the interior sheet metal between the trunk key motor and driver's tail light. If you have it, you can also find an additional option code sticker on page 1 of the Maintenance Book that came with the car. It should be in the same vinyl or leather folder as the Owner's Manual in the glove box.

Best wishes on the sale, but hopefully you can convince your dad to let you keep it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Just be aware that if you keep it, there are regular required maintenance costs that greatly exceed those of a Honda or Toyota (Scion). Budget $2K a year for maintenance. Others may argue the Dollar amount, but all should agree with the concept.

Again, Best wishes!

Thanks Buzz.

I know all about the extra money it requires to maintain these from the 944 days. 12 years ago when I was 18 we bought one together that required a lot of TLC. It's required a few new "parts" like a transmission, entire clutch assembly and related parts, timing chains, etc.

It's got 76k and it's about due for timing belts AFAIK. My dad kept money aside when he bought it 3 years ago for doing the timing belts on this 968. He offered to pay to have them done if I wasn't going to sell it anytime soon.

He is just a little strange. I'm getting married in November and told him my fiance wants me to take our wedding "winnings" and buy a used car. I've been putting her through school with the help of school loans and also recently bought a new Townhome. Money is tight and the 1998 cherokee I've got has been good for 5 years but has only a little life left. He recently got himself all riled up and bought himself a new truck and wants to see me in something new and nice too. I'm 30 and I ought to be able to do it on my own but don't mind the help...

So I've got this car now and I'd rather not sell it.
