Option Codes
#41

don't know about the marking

don't know when exactly the cutoff was between the 221 and 220 types. there was a lot of sticker goofiness going on in 92. the option codes don't always match the cars. i've seen quite a few of them with options not listed, and some listed that are not there. i think it's because the US market was not originally slated to get the 92, but sales were slow overseas, and some cars got sent here. some of those had to have things changed to meet DOT and such. some cars got stuff from the parts bin and they didn't update the sticker.

as for the quaiffe, i have no clue how that one is made. i've only seen one car with it, and that one was noisy, so i don't know if it was working right. what i do know is that the torsen and the guards both spin the wheels opposite, like an open diff.

Interesting, well that would at least allow me to confirm a clutch type or the torsen since they act different. Have to check that out sometime when I have the back off the ground. Especially if my sticker may not be completely accurate. Thanks.

early 92s had the clutch type and was option code 221

what i was talking about was the wheels both turning in the same direction, as a clutch type or lock-up would do. a torsen will spin the other wheel the opposite direction (until enough load is applied to it). how much load for lockup depends on the diff. some are actually adjustable by means of shims and such.

So I guess you can't always trust the codes of the 92s. I have an early 92, with a clutch type as verified by raising both wheels off the ground and turning one wheel (and the other turns in the same direction). But, my sticker has a 220 listed.

interesting, but not surprising - the stickers are not nearly as accurate as we would like. it's the nature of a hand-made car that did not sell well. 92s are particularly odd, as they had a bunch of carryover stuff from the 944. the really early ones vary quite a bit.
