Oil Sensor pegged at 5
#1

I changed my oil sender and it is now pegged at 5.  Could this happen if I crossed the wires in the oil sender.

That seems like a reasonable place to start.

Many gauges operate on a ground signal, not a "hot" signal. If you have the signal wire attached to a ground, it will peg the gauge, and possibly burn it out. I would swap the wires first, then worry about more serious things.

Fuel gauges are often like this because there is an inherent problem with hot wires in a fuel tank. Mix those two wires up and things get interesting in a hurry.

My oil sender seems to function okay, but when I was underneath a couple of weeks back reattaching the streamlining plates I noticed one of the terminals had broken off. I'm assuming the sender was finding earth through the chassis, but if that is the case, why bother with two connection pins?

In any case I bought a new sender and hope to find time to swap them over soon, I'll be interested to see if the gauge reads differently and shall post on here.
