offer made on my car
#1

I was out for a drive, so I'm posting here because I have no idea where else to put this.. While I stopped at a supermarket yesterday this guy with a blue 928GTS ( never seen a 928 in blue before ) asked me if I was interested in selling the car. He wanted an Iris blue 968 ( not midnight, not cobalt.. had to be Iris ! ) We chatted a bit, he said he also has a blue 911 SC, but prefers front engine Porsches. I told him the car's not for sale and to sign up and post on the Forum that he's looking for an Iris 968, but he said he does not want the hassle and since my car was there, live, he was willing to pay $ 25k as is, no PPI, nothing ! He offered a cashier's check drawn on Wells Fargo branch just 30 seconds walk from where we were standing. And he was well aware what the market value is for 968s, but could not care less. I told him no again, and added something which, in retrospect, was clearly not true :

" I woud not sell my 968 for any price". Clearly I would.. but after getting home and thinking a bit more about what

I would taken right there and then.. probably $ 45k minimum - that would enable me to buy the MO3O pristine coupe in Florida for $ 25K with 58K miles on it , spend $ 12K to repaint it and $ 8k in different wheels / tires, as well as suspension and exhaust mods.

You should have taken $20k and been happy. Bought a one for $10K, put $5k in it and put $5k in your pocket. At his $25k offer you could have had a spare $10k.

I think you should call him up and counter offer $27k.

Wow -- I think $25k is pretty aggressive bid. Just to flip the question, if you didn't have the car already but had $25k extra, would you pay $25k to buy your own car? Sometimes, having key or check in hand changes how you feel....

Ah, the old spread between "bid" and "asked". Yes, it sometimes helps to imagine yourself on the other side of the table. I must say, though, that I would not take $25k for my car. Yes, I might be able to buy another one, do to it all that I've done to this one, and have a few extra bucks in my pocket. However, the "extra bucks" would have to be a lot more than $25k would provide to go through the effort of redoing everything. So - while I might not buy my car for $25k, I definitely would not sell it for that - the devil you know...

Well- I just went through this from both sides: having purchased my new-to-me cab in September and selling my coupe in October.

For me, it would have been situational...

I would have gladly sold my coupe for $25k- no questions asked. But, my coupe was not worth $25k so it would have been a no-brainer.

I would not take $25k for my cab. I haven't even contemplated what it would take to get the cab out of my hands, but it would take a significant sum of money beyond $25k to do it. Everything has a price I suppose!\

Well DS- if you were a 928 fan, perhaps an even-up trade for his 928GTS would have been in order?! I've always wanted a 928GTS, and blue would be a nice color to have!

Heck, I would let mine go for $14 with the K-58's.

Yes, without a moment's hesitation. I can't think of ANY car in the $ 25k range I'd find more appealing.

In fact if I take looks into consideration ( call me superficial, but I place a huge weight and value on that )

I can't think of any car under $ 50K I'd rather buy vs. a 968. That is not to say I'd pay $ 50k for a 968, but selling mine for less than $ 50K is also out of the question.

The 928 GTS was awsome ! However, having heard nothing but nightmares about its upkeep and problems, I

would not trade cars either. Besides, it seemed to me he had no intention to get rid of his car, rather

just throwing away money to add another toy to his blue Porsches collection.

25K sounds great until you add up the time/money it takes to find one, PPI one, repair one. By the time you are done, I doubt that 25K is a net gain, besides I would feel like I sold a part of me to another guy after I put all the care into my 968, then I would feel weird getting another 968 just to start all over.

I may only speak for myself, but my 968 is more to me than just a vehicle or a toy; it is my daily stress reliever mixed with a little dose of youth elixir thrown in.

Say it loud!

Say it proud!

I love my Porsche!

Dan, I was just about to castigate you for not taking the $25k offer and running away but then I found this Iris Blue 968 listed for $26,500:

For the time being, this tells me that Iris Blue is the most expensive color!

Im guessing the offers will be at 25 for that one to.

Dan- I'm both impressed w/ your passion and love for your car while at the same time jealous, that while not even trying to sell your car you get an offer above 20K. Talk about right place right time. I would of closed the deal.

i totally understand dan's reluctance - i also understand why people think he's nuts - but, they fail to take into account something less tangible, which has a lot of value - this is what happens with a car like ours - it's not like a buick or a toyota - this car has character and more esoteric attraction that does not easily translate to monetary value to the bystander

as he said, sure, he could go out and buy another one, even with fewer miles on it, and then do to it what he has done to his, but where would he be when he was done?

given what dan has done to his car, $25k would barely be a "break even" number, and still not give you any comfort zone he has now of the knowledge of the history of the car

there is a lot of "value" in knowing a car - another used car is another set of unknowns - i get less and less excited about project cars as i get older - i'm getting to the point where i want them "done" by the time i get to them

the good news about all this is that no matter which way you go, project or completed, these cars are very inexpensive ways to go and have fun

Hey, Flash, I've got a 968 cab that's "done" - so I'll sell it to you at the bargain price of...hmmm, let's see - yup, $40k would pry it out of my hands (I think...).

Thanks Trevor, I'm going to look into that other Iris. I'd buy it in a N.Y. minute if my wife would not question my sanity, owning two 968s, much less two identical ones ( I don't care if YOU guys think I'm nuts, 'cause I don't have to live with YOU every day.. )

Yes I am THAT impressed with the 968, and although on single item characteristics ( speed, handling, ergonomics, response/feel, comfort, practicality, looks, uniqueness, etc ) there may be half a dozen cars in each category better than the 968, I find nothing else which matches the entire package this car offers you and how easily it becomes " part of you " when you drive it.

Seriously though, and Bob knows this, as does Ron ( midblue ) and probably a few others .. I have several watches, each one of which is as expensive as the 968 I drive, so it's not about how cheap this car is, but in my own little crazy 968-obsessed universe I have no desire to own another GT, except for a DB9 or perhaps an F430 and I'm sure as he*l not going to spend $200K + for a used one of those...when I can have this car for the cost of a radiator in those vehicles . I maybe nuts, but not stupid

As I noted in another post some time ago, I know a multi-millionaire in the area whose car is also a 968. Same irrational passion for the vehicle that motivates him to stick to this car I suppose.

Now, must go back and see if some nice gift for the wife would convince her the value of buying another Iris blue cannot be questioned within LOGIC parameters

more to the point of not compromising at all on what you want, and that's why finding another 968 and modifying it to your taste, is not as easy as it may seem..

this Iris blue for sale: ok with the exterior color and condition as it appears in the ad, but it has the light grey interior. I can't live with that, I want classic grey, so I'd have to spend whatever it costs to redo the entire interior..

I know, sucks to be so A-retentive , but I would only drive a 968 that is either midnight blue, or slate grey, or arctic silver or Iris blue, and only with a classic grey interior. not black, not cashmere, not light grey, nada.

That's why I'm not selling this car even for twice or three times its market value.. So any 968s out there with less than 50k miles on the odo that fit the above description, let me know..

BTW, I think the GTS was what they call Prussian Blue - oh, baby...only if 968s would have been made in that color !!

I think you made the right decision, especially when you mentioned you would repaint the replacement car you purchased. Iris blue is a rare color (although they are out there) so if you love that one color that much then you have to stick with it. Kind of like my mint green cab., I could never find another one so it would take an huge offer to get it from me and even then, i would have to think about it. That is the beauty of a 968, they're just so unique and unusual, all of them.

LOL, isn't that how things always work, though ? You don't need a loan or a credit card and you get a million offers

in the mail for one, but when you need it, forget about it ! If you're not looking for a job, recruiters call you every week... when you need a job, all you get is the sound of crickets for months and months.. When you're single you actually might have to make an effort... but you get married and suddenly women seem to come out of the woodwork chatting you up and handing you their phone numbers, etc..

Not trying to attain something seems to work in reverse. Note to self: Try not to get rich.

Looks like you may have solved Dan's blue Porsche guy's problem. Dan you should call him and tell him about this one. Then everyone's happy.

I'd want break even plus 20% on this car, because I would replace it, with a better one, and spend money on it to get it the way I wanted. I bought low as this was a bit of a flyer for me. Knowing how much I enjoy the car now, I would spend 50% more the second time around for a younger example. Not that I am unhappy with the old girl that I have, she just needs a tuck here and a buff there...

That interior is killer! Looks similar to my cobalt/lt gray interior except the carpet in mine is light gray, which I can't stand. If, and I do mean if, I ever decide to really keep this car forever, I would put the cobalt carpet in the car. I actually think there is no cobalt carpet only dark blue like my floormats. Anyone know about this? I know there are some cobalt cabs and coupes out there with blue interiors.

Dan, I totally understand your desire to keep your car but I would have countered 30k. I had a gentleman who wanted my red cab until he found out I had a cobalt coupe too. Then he wanted the coupe and I said it's not for sale. Finally I said if you want the coupe, you'll have to buy both. We were counter offering back and forth and agreed on 50k for both. He was set to fly down from San Fran with his wife and drive them both back but he called the next morning -- after buying a grand in airplane tickets -- to say his wife decided against the idea after sleeping on it! The whole night I couldn't sleep thinking about how much time I spent looking for these two cars and how I would be sans 968s for a while. My ultimate goal however, is a low miles speed yellow or maritime blue M030 coupe or a cab and with 50k I know I could get one... Shoot, maybe one of each!

I've been keeping my eyes peeled but apparently someone beat me to the most recent yellow cab for sale!
