Nothing beats an old crappy car
#21

So tne conclusion is : everyone needs at least two cars - the modern one of your choice ( and budget ) and the old one of your choice (and budget ) . Problem solved.

p.s. wish I had the budget for an old ( 1961 ) Ferrari 250 GT spider / California . And yes, that might be the ONLY convertible I could be convinced to drive. p.p.s. Can I borrow $ 20 mil from you guys ?

Oh, I was just saying that in jest, I don't need the money because I'm still waiting for the $ 11.5 million I was promised by the Nigerian royal family's official representative who sent me a personal email asking for the same bank routing number . I expect the funds should arrive any day now... So one at a time please, one at a time.

By now everyone knows my sentiments about cars' "creature comforts" and dashboards which look like the space shuttle's control panel or as if you're driving while inside a video game, but if I had no choice, I might pick this new MBZ AMG GTS interior . The bonus: in dense fog or a massive snow storm you could probably just instrument-fly the car :-) . And it's a pretty nice arrangement, IMO

Needs a strobe light and a disco ball. But it sure is sharp looking.

Speaking of old crappy ( but legendary ) cars : I received a thumbs up today while at a four way stop sign from the driver of a mid-late 60s Ford GT 500 convertible , as the car was directly facing my 968 so there was at least one or two full seconds of mutual admiration opportunity . I returned the thumbs up gesture and not just to be polite but meant it because I love those cars ..GT 350s also. Felt really good about what I consider " American royalty " recognizing and appreciating the uniqueness of the 968. Made my day . :-)

PSA for the creature comfort lovers : Chrysler sent out an advisory warning that their new cars with the fancy-schmancy ( that's a technical term used by automobile makers ) wireless technology feature which is standard in the new models, can be hacked - and some have already been hacked into : the hacker can disable the brakes, make all the electronics go haywire ( another very technical term ) , engage your cruise control and even control your steering , possibly causing the car to go off the road ..while you're driving it . Chrysler is sending a software upgrade to fix this problem ...and I'm sure the hackers will soon find their own fix to override that, lol. Oh, the benefits and perils of technology !

I think if I am still driving at 90 years old I would want to drive something like the Lambro LM 009? a 4 wheel drive Jeep like or Hummer like tank of a car. It had a countanch v12 engine and weighed about 5000 lbs. with bullet proof tires. That way if I hit something I would still be alive. Only 300 of made world wide from 1984-1990. Now they may be making a new version of it in 2017.

Meanwhile at eBay's auction house .. https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/...02-17-2016 .

The guy that paid that much for the Honda Accord either had a lobotomy shortly before pushing the buy button, or, that's the car in which his high school sweetheart first polished his stick shift knob so he paid for its nostalgic value, but are you friggin' kidding me ?! Anyone who spends more than $ 1,000 for that car ( and yes, in showroom condition and with that low mileage ) is nuts !

OK lets talk about how many steps it takes to change something on a modern cars audio system. On the wifes Audi I have to scroll through lots of crap to change a station of bump up the bass. Give me a F'in knob or button that does it in one step...please.

I read a while back that Porsche owners brag about how many miles they have on their cars, and Ferrari owners brag about how few.

While I can't speak for everyone with a Porsche, the owners I know drive them like cars and enjoy every minute of the experience.

The article does not say anything about how many times that engine might have been rebuilt top to bottom..

and now quite a while later, i still have the 968 I haven't driven in forever, I start it, but don't have time to drive it. The '66 beetle, same deal - the half restored flatnose Volvo in storage, and a Harley I don't ride - got rid of the jeep, and took a bath on it after dumping $13K into it.

People wonder why cool old cars sit in garages and yards for decades. It's because no one wants to pay a fair price for them and the owner is willing to let it sit because they don't want to lose their shirt on it and because value is value. They get tired of being low-balled on it every time someone walks by it.

I have had a couple that walk by my house several times a week and every time I stop and say hi, they ask about the beetle. Their son wants it but has to sell his first. They ask me every time what my lowest number on it is. It's the same as you asked me the last time. Look it's not a hardship sale. Pay my price or don't, but don't beef at me for it. I don't want to hear it.

It's fun at first to own several older classic type cars until the car insurance bill comes due and the mechanic needs paid. Then they become a huge pain in the butt. WHen you get busy and don't have time to drive them, days turn into weeks, weeks into months and months into years far to quickly.

Want my advice, buy one you love, when you don't love it anymore, get rid of it for another one you love but be prepared to lose your shirt. People don't want to pay what somethings worth, or what you did to it, they only want to pay what they think it's worth.

If i have a time machine I would go back and not buy any of them....
