GOING FROM STOCK TO IMPROVED IN AUTO CROSSING
#1

I plan on getting into auto crossing in a big way so my questions are as follows:
What can a person do to their 968 and keep it as a stock vehicle.

What can you do to keep it in the improved category and not into the full blown modified category?

William, you have to get a copy of the Rules for the organization you plan to race with. PCA rules may be downloaded from their website (pca.org). SCCA required each competitor to purchase a copy of their rules when I last raced with them. It wasn't too expensive, $15 back in the day. Have fun and good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Hi William, I haven't been autocrossing for a few years, but I doubt the basics have changed much. They call it stock class because little can be changed. Basically the only changes allowed in stock class are: any shock as long as it attached the same, any wheel the same as factory size, any DOT tire, any catback exhaust, any front sway-bar and bushing, any air filter, any alignment, and spare tire, pump, and floor mats can be removed. Your biggest goal for a while is to learn to drive the car on course - seat time! The driver is the biggest variable in stock classes. The SCCA handbook is available on line at: http://www.scca.com/contentpage.aspx?content=61 The good news is that 968's with M030 at one time were the hot ride in 'B' stock and I think they can still be competative - certainly enough to have a lot of fun.

I you want to see some interesting racing, Labor Day weekend is the Columbia River Classic vintage races and All British Field meet at PIR. I'll be there in a 1969 Lotus formula ford #18. This race is also part of the Foumula 5000 national tour and they have special races for them. See the fastest cars built in the 60's and 70's. more information at: http://www.sovren.org/. The paddock is open so come by and say hi.

Cheers,

William,
IF you're planning to auto-x with PCA...
rules book assesses modification points based on the mod. stock class allows up to 8 modification points, 9-20 mod points puts you in 'prepared' class. PCA rules for Zone 8 where i live also say that aftermarket mufflers, airbox mods, and chips are specifically not allowed in stock class; this may be different for your region/zone.
side note - a supercharger is worth 15 points...

SCCA will have your car in C stock and setup right they are very competative. I run mine nationally and have been very happy with it.

I've recently been looking into where the SCCA would put my car. In 2010, SCCA developed the "Street Touring" catagory. Street Touring R (STR) Supplemental Class where the 968 is listed. Problem is that I don't see on any of the results pages where the 944, 968 or S2000, RX7 cars are listed in this class. They all seem to e in the Stock or prepared class. Anybody have any light they can shed on this?

You have to figure out who you are going to run with, then read there rules and maximize for them. I run with PCA. I saw BVA say something about points. That is a regional thing. So knowing where you want to run is important. You may be maximized for the local rules, but be pushed to a different class in national rules (national PCA uses PCRs and those don't include a point system).

I know with the national PCA rules, you can run you car bone stock (in showroom stock). The next level is production, which allows a large number of items to be changed.

The 968 is in SCCA C stock if totally stock or with different front bar, race tires, brake pads, cat back. A more modified 968 with street tires, suspension work, intake, headers(I think) etc. would be in STR with the miatas and s2000's. A really modified would take you into ASP which is totally outgunned in the class.
