Just dropping a note as I'm looking to purchase a '93 968 Cabrio that I have crossed paths with. It's a beauty and has 28K miles on it. I was pointed this way so as to educate myself on some things I may want to do to get it up road ready. Looking for tips and recommendations , specifically on maintenance items that will be needed at this point.

Welcome,

You will love your 968, if the maintenance is up to date.

Timing Belt/Balance Shaft Belt, not only how many miles ago, but when? (More than 5 years, don't even start the car until they are changed).

Leaking power steering hose on the passenger side.

Most of the rubber parts are probably toast by now, if they haven't been changed (stuff like castor blocks on the A arms)

This is a Tiptronic, right? The flex dampners are known to tear, you will feel vibration before it goes. WHEN it goes, it is expensive to fix (not exactly sure, but figure $3-4K by the time you're done, someone with a Tip might be able to estimate that better).

Cosmetic bits and pieces are probably going to look pretty nice on a 28k car. I would expect a bit of wear on the driver's seat bolster.

Welcome Shawn, you will find more information on here than you can process. Take it slow and do the first things first. Belts and rollers are a must, the wire that runs from the alternator to the starter and from the ignition switch to the alternator are often degraded and can pose dangers to your wallet and your safety.

Enjoy the site,

Welcome. Enjoy your ride! Lower radiator hose and fuel lines need a careful look also.

Thank you Jay!

This is all great advice. Yes, this is Triptronic. Is there prevention need on the dampners that will reduce potential repair?  I am going to have the timing belt changed right away.

I need to find a good mechanic!!

Thank you Matt. I will post as i have work done for further comments and tips.

Jay: i am going to ask for the records. Based on the care this car is in, i'm hoping I right that he has kept up to date on the basics.

Hi Jay:

I have heard this multiple times on the 5 year rule. Yes, this is a Tiptronic. I would like to understand if there is a way to reduce the potential repair cost for the dampners.

Thank you everyone. I am expecting to take delivery on this car in the next week. I'm looking for a mechanic. I don't suppose anyone knows someone in the western burbs of Chicago ;-)

I would like to give you good news, but the Fle Dampner will tear at some point. Rubber degrades. If everything else checks out I would buy the car. It is 25 years old and at some point the best of cars need a major repair. Manual folks have to deal with the dual mass flywheel, so we're all in the same boat.
