Phillip Raby is a well know Porsche 911 fan, the video is so biased its insulting and they comments that follow are all by idiots that have never driven a 911, never mind a 968.

 

and the 968 needs some attention too, its been left to fade, its not very well looked after the paint is flat, the inside is dirty.

 

just a shame these folks feel they should degrade and berate these great cars at any given oppotunity

Most 911 purists live in ignorance . And many of those fortunate enough to experience a 951 or a 928 or the epitome that is a 968 , will live in denial their minds are so stuck on their rear engine glorified VW bugs, they refuse to accept even what they see and feel when they dive a 968. IMHO.

I've owned both for a long time, all daily drivers.   924 Turbo (931) + 944 + 968 for a total of 20 years.   '82 911 and now an '02 996 for a total of 13 years.

 

I couldn't help but find the comparison I wrote when first joining the 968Forums:   http://www.968forums.com/topic/3332-excellence-968boxster32-shootout/?p=29289.  I was coming off of the '82 911SC and had just bought the 968.

 

A few points about the video:

- They are different cars - it is just a fact.

- What is missing from the video is all of the assumptions in place before even starting the comparison test:  for example 911s have always been the flagship, 968 was the entry level car.

- We may be too focused on the conclusion -- (typical for us westerners), you know: "all that matters is who wins".  The point is I thought the testers were quite complementary about the 968, and they really did like it, so let's not forget that.   But not enough to overcome the prejudices going into the test.

- The one comment about preferring the 944 styling over the 968, because it is more raw, should have disqualified him.

- I think the selling prices were 30K for the 968 and 45K for the 964.   I think a viewer could conclude that the price / performance value is better for the 968.  For an additional 50% higher price for a 964 you really don't get much more, but unfortunately they didn't make that obvious point.

 

Remember that essentially all of their evaluation and comments were about "which one do you prefer", i.e. make a decision based on your underlying assumptions and preconceived notions and your own preferences.   And their basis was quite narrow:  how does it feel going down some country lanes.  There were really no other considerations, so it was hardly a comprehensive or fair and balanced test.  But then that is typical for Web Publishing like this video, unreviewed, unedited, etc.  -- the goal is to get clicks, not to provide the highest quality content.

I still marvel that a car that only had some 4600 units imported into North America doesn’t get any traction from this rarity. I’ve always received gushing compliments on my 968’s and listened to Porsche drivers say, ‘I love this car and wish I never got rid of mine’. Mind you they all now drive 911’s!!!!

Have both a 911 and 968.....both are equally enjoyable.  I like to think of the 968 as a sword and the 911 as a chainsaw.  Two totally different experiences, which is why I have them.  Truth is, everyone likes them both, but it's the 968 that has repeated requests to be in shows because it is a great example and is very unique.

It is funny, that was a follow up to a previous comparison he did with a modern Golf vs. a classic 968.  The modern car impressed him enough that he ranked it above the 968. That caused a lot of comments about how he was not driving the 968 properly, which is why this video came about.  I agree with robadams56, they are different experiences.  If I had the space, I would not turn down a 964 for my garage.

 

I always try and remember that everyone has their biases in these videos and that they only get a few hours with the car, so they cannot really get time to understand the strengths of the subject car. When I had a 911 guy drive my 968 for Panorama, he was still trying to get his head around it the next day at the photo shoot and wanted to drive it again. But, of course, his 993 ended up being his preferred "last analogue" car.  To each their own.

Now that I am driving a 997.2 Targa I find these comparisons more relevant in my understanding of these types of discussions. The targa is just a flat out cool car to drive. I’ve not yet learned all of its nuances and handling capabilities. The power is intoxicating. Interestingly everyone wants to race me or cut me off. I never had that with the 968.

Comparing the two does a disservice to both. They are both Porsche’s with quite a few years in between. The 968 has a visceral feel that lets you know and feel that you are driving. On the same road I can feel the nannies working on the targa. This allows me to drive that section differently. They are both fun to drive albeit with different types of driving characteristics.

I’m passed by a lot of faster cars at the track but I’m driving my 968, while they are utilizing the nannies to correct their driving. I’m the nanny. A driver appreciates, or not, that which he is driving. Getting into discussions about which is better misses this point. Do you enjoy the drive or not? If not why?
