Thought it worth sharing my recent experience of a stereo upgrade. When I purchased my beloved 968 it had a rather old but working Kenwood cd player and factory front speakers. The sound was only just bearable with absolutely no bass. Infact before making my first long cross country trip I went out and had an 8" bazooka with integral amp installed, as research had shown than finding space for a separate amp in the 968's cabin was going to be tough, plus the bazooka came with great reviews. Result - a huge improvement but my appetite for actually enjoying the sound now placed too much pressure on the old fronts, which started to break up.
I'd also recently taken to putting all my music on my other new toy an ipod touch - so I started looking for a hifi solution with this in mind.
My set up is now: Alpine IDA X001 with iPod connected and Polk Momo MMC5250 components (5.25").
Have to say I was initially very disppointed only to find that the installers had the fronts out of phase, plus you have to remember to set your ipod sound not to give bass enhancement. After a bit of tweaking the result is pretty fantastic. I do have a list of grips though: 1. the Alpine does not support cover flow on the iPod, 2. even though I don't have CD's in the car it would be nice to have that option, 3. the Alpine doesn't have RDS.
As their premium product I think they could of done better and in the future I may look at boosting its output.
A footnote is that when I took the car in for the installation the 'knowledgable' guys said they would fit Alpine 6.5" fronts - I told them I thought 5.25" were the max without modification, but let them continue anyway - the result was very expensive Polk's at the same price as the Alpines because of their mistake... thankyou 968 Forum!
