Hi, I have just brought a rather tatty 968 Sport in the UK.

1992, Slate Grey, (I think its L22D?), sports seats in black leather, club sport type steering wheel and 3 piece speed line look alike wheels.

They may be genuine: how do you tell?

Anyway its very cosmetically "challenged", almost every panel has a dent or flaw of some sort.

Mechanically, with 144,000 miles, it seems good, oil pressure is high, m no strange noises, well over 12 volts and stable water temperature.

Driven her about 120 or so miles so far and building the trust ...

Does Porsche UK keep online service history data, as she has very little paperwork?

Lots to do to her to improve and hoping the forum will be really useful !

On one hand you've bought a 968 with some issues, but, the 968 Sport is a pretty rare bird, given that they were only built for the UK market. It will be worth the adventure.

 

Before anything else, change the Timing Belt and Balance Shaft Belt if you don't know the history of service. Catastrophic belt failure will make very bad things happen to valves and the head.

 

Lots of other things to read here, and a great group of resources.

Hi and welcome,


I'm in the UK and Porsche lost all the dealer service history when they updated the systems back in 2003


The sport came with the clubsport steering wheel, 20mm lower suspension and a few other bits missing


They are essentially a CS with the electrical goddies added back on


There are more sports and clubsports on the road than coupes

I am pretty close to JMG Porsche in Ferndown.

I understand that they are pretty good on 968s? 

Does anyone have an opinion?

So already raided Ebay: drivers manual and wallet, sun visor clips, boot liner clips, tool kit, compressor, glove box struts ...

Also touch up from Chipex, as far as I can see the Slate Grey code is 22D?

Fixed the dodgy boot release, the motor had lost its circle, so I drilled and tapped the arm and locktited in an M4 bolt instead.

Rear heated window now working with some new crimps.

Temperature gauge had fallen out backwards, that's sorted.

Dash lights seem dim, what type are the bulbs and can they be swapped out for white LEDs, or is there a heat issue?

Nearside headlamp doesn't always drop so needs investigation and they are so dim! Thinking LED H4 lamps?

Both headlamp washers broken too: they look expensive are there any close alternatives?

Interior all pretty good the only fault so far seems to be drivers seat front lift motor is dead, not investigated it yet.

So looking forward to some Christmas break tinkering ...

Dash lighting is spread from the bulbs by clear plastic that has been coated on the backside with silver to trap light. The silver seems to come off over time and allows the light to scatter. Some have repainted the plastic and that helps. LEDs are also reto-fit by others. Gage cluster has to come out for repairs.

 

As far as the head lights, they are normally very good. I would track down the ground wires and clean up the contacts to the body.

I am not going to slate JMG, but when Jon was running it full time it was the place to go, now its run by others you might need a very fat wallet.

 

and I have seen some very shoddy work from them in the last few years,

 

I would also consider Porsche for your parts, as buying 23 + old parts is a false economy especially when you pay more for second hand than new a lot of the time

 

The seat will probably be the switch rather than the motor,

The sun visor clips will not stop your visors drooping, you will need what is described in the parts list as bearings, the bit that screws on with the visor fixed to it.

Do not fit H4 LED's in the car as there are none that are approved for EU or UK use (MOT Fail), I have Night Breaker extreme in my car and they are fine, and also try not to compare them to modern Xenon Headlights, they are 30 year old tech

 

the headlamp washers are a very unusal option on a sport, but they are expensive part number 944 628 074 00 01C £50.26 each

Thank you for your replies so far.

Looks like its going to be a labour of love this car, I love driving it as I guess it harks back to a 944 Turbo I had almost new in the late 80's.

It looks like it has been fitted with cheap clear front turn indicators to get through the UK MOT test, the old ones were in the boot, (trunk) in a box; looking at one the part number is 944.631.057.00.

Does this mean its a 944 part or were all 968 parts badged as such?

What's the feeling stay clear or go back to original orange?

The clear one are off a 993 and don’t fit correctly, the original orange ones are far better, your lucky to get the originals with the car, they are £100 each these days


Lots of parts are started with 944, or 951 or 928 very few are 968, there are even some start 477 from the old VW days

Welcome. Sounds like you are well on your way to sorting it all out.  Agree with Waylander, use new parts not old parts esp for plastics and lights, you'll have much better success..

Well,

  I have had the old girl for a few weeks now and I am generally pleased with her.

She's definitely cosmetically challenged: almost every panel has a fault of some sort !

I have done the following so far:

Replaced headlamp bulbs with Osram Nightbreakers; great improvement !

Cleaned and rebuilt the headlamp surround trims as they were broken too.

Fixed the rear hatch motor which had lost the circle off the end; all works well now.

Completely removed, cleaned, repainted and remounted the rear bridge spoiler and associated black under spoiler and rear window trims: all the mounts had broken off ...

Taken apart, cleaned and dehumidified the front fog/ spot lamps, both mounts were broken where they screw in so glued them back with epoxy.

Slight water leak from top hose casting on front of engine; so removed the two M8 allen cap screws, one sheared so drilled out and helicoiled: no leak !

Cleaned the leather, all looks better.

Bought some new dash bulbs not fitted yet.

Fixed the sun visor clips with new ones.

Removed the sunroof and cleaned out the gutter and drain, cleaned the brush seal.

Removed and re-glued the rear headlining vinyl that covers the sunroof actuators.

Took off all 4 wheels, thoroughly cleaned, checked brakes, put a little Copperslip on threads and remounted.

Found that I have Koni suspension, a nice stainless exhaust and braided brake hoses ...

All wheels and tyres OK, one with s slight rim dent and lots of curbing so touched up with silver paint; look so much better now.

Central locking is very hit and miss so thats going to be the next job I think ...

Contemplating a Blaunpunkt 270BT bluetooth head unit to replace the Pioneer as they look a bit more period, (and I still like CDs) ?

New battery on its way too.

Also some glovebox arms ...

Oh: I've driven her quite a bit too !

Youve been quite busy! Congratulations on the car acquisition and on having the skills to work on it.

I have a list with similar things on it, but much shorter. Still plugging away at it.
