Im a big Porsche fan and was the owner of a lovely Cayman until i had to sell it last year. Replaced it with a MK5 VW Golf (I think a Rabbit for you Americans??) GTI and find it remarkably uninvolving and unrewarding to drive. Ive never liked it.

I have decided to do something about it and am currently doing research. Contenders are a 968 or a 987 Boxster. Boxster is the obvious choice but right now I really fancy a useable classic and something a little different.

I had my first drive in a manual 968 Sport today and what can I say? I loved it. It just feels like a mans car - initial thoughts were its very low with your bum (butt for you Americans :-)) really close to the road, with a heavy clutch and steering (compared to the Golf anyway). But at speed it just all comes together into a real driving machine. I think its one of those cars that a lots of my non petrolhead friends just wont get. And thats fine with me.

I will be lurking round these forums for the next couple of months gathering information before getting something in the new year, unless something perfect comes up before then.

Welcome. You have certainly nailed the 968 appeal. It's a forgotten front engine jewel that most sports car owners don't get but when properly sorted is a chuffing good time...and it's not a 911, the Porsche Miata

That being said if someone gave me a '97 993 in Arena Red I might keep it as spare

"and find it remarkably uninvolving and unrewarding to drive. Ive never liked it." - Sounds like my first wife.

But aaaanyway,... welcome to the forum and good luck to you - I think you'd be better served with the 968 than the 986, but only if you're a bit handy and enjoy turning heads out of curiosity rather than derision (the 968 has a much lower "douchebag factor" than the 986). But some would call me biased, because my license plate says "NOTABXTR".
