Hi,
New member checking in.
I am currently doing research / due diligence looking into the 968 as a new "fun car" for touring and lighter track and autocross work. I'm hoping to settle into a platform that will stay with me for a long time. I'm looking for something that is primarily fun and rewarding to drive more so than something that is super fast on track/course.
I've been without a dedicated fun car for the better part of 8 years. My last fun car was a S2000 that I did a lot of mods to (engine bolt-ons, suspension, etc.) and I had a lot of fun. I've had a fair number of interesting cars before that (Subaru, 911, CRX, Jeeps, others) but the autocross/track bug only really bit with the S2000.
Hoping to pull the trigger on a new to me car in the spring. Other cars on my short list are Mercedes 280CE (think Carlsson W123), BMW E46 M3, new FIAT 124 Spyder, early Miata, classic Mustang, and some others. Depending on how the wind is blowing I'll be enthusiastic about any of these but the 968 or M3 are likely the logical choices of the bunch for the intended purpose.
I'm a technical type of person that spins wrenches/welds/codes; already investigating MS3Pro/VEMS w/ ICE integration, coil-overs, custom intakes, etc. to compare against the other cars on the short list. Whatever I get into will be optimized to the last possible bit short of turning it into a race car. Rule number one is it has to be comfortable enough to tour with in the classic GT car sense. No noisy exhaust, aluminum bushings or rose jointed TREs and it will maintain full interior and sound deadening, etc. Tall order and implies compromise (see fun and rewarding sentence above).
That's my interest in the 968 in a nutshell.
