Love the idea of HID's in my car. Living in the bush you get a really good idea of the relative merits of headlight types and having had HID's in a big Volvo they are the best option, although LED's are catching up and will probably displace HID's at the apex in a few years. Then we can wait another few for the price to become doable for us mere mortals. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I have Hella Rallye 4000 Compact spots on my work car with 100 watt HID bulbs. Not an instatnt response, but after a couple of milliseconds to "warm up" the spread and depth is awesome.

One word of warning though. In Europe and Aus. it is illegal to run HID low (dipped) beams without a headlight washer. Something about a dirty lens scattering the extra bright light into the eyes of oncoming traffic, or some such EU beureaucratic bulldust. The local Ricers get pulled over and fined for it in Aus on a regular basis. Don't know what the legislation in the US, Federal, or any US states is but it would pay to check.

Whenever there's anything posted about headlight mods for a 968, everyone (including me) automatically jumps to the conclusion that the poster is working on a new fixed light solution. In this case, zms did something a little different - an upgrade (in terms of headlight performance) of the pop-ups, and it appears that he met his goal very nicely.

My bad too. I assumed they'd be fixed, but there's nothing in his first post about that at all. Doh!

Why would you want to get rid of the pop up lights which to me, are one of the defining characteristic of the 968!

Great job ZMS!

For a street car, there's no good reason, other than that some people think they make the car look dated. But for a track car, removing them saves A LOT of weight off the front end - around 30 pounds!

They are at once the essence of the car, and a frog-eyed embarrassment that I keep stowed unless I really have to have them.

As a track car I totally agree! Pop up lights, especially 944 lights, are essentially air brakes and the motors are heavy.

But pop up lights are just too cool and the reaction from people when the frog eyes come up is priceless! Bi xenon or LED lights in the original pop up lights would be great in modernizing the 968. I'm going to try this with my 944S first then perhaps do the same as ZMS did here on my 968.

Got them adjusted and drive home tonight- first drive in the 68 in a month- bummer! I can't even try to explain how much better the light output is. I was expecting big thing, but this is staggering. I am beyond pleased with how this project came out. The beam pattern is wonderful, and the amount of light is awe inspring ompared to stock. Had an 10 gt3 at the shop and compared light output, couldn't tell the difference between the 2. Thanks for all the compliments- it's been a lot of work, but well worth it!

Let us know if you plan to make a few for distribution. It's still a great thing to have tucked away in the closet in case we want to upgrade later on.

I'm keen on the idea of a HID upgrade like this and I assume going back to stock is doable? Yes, please let the forum know if you will be making these available.

Ill see what I can do- by replacing the lenses and installing the projector, it may be impossible to go back to stock without buying new lights. If there is enough interest I could do more lenses, but it isn't exactly easy.

Just curious - after experiencing the dramatically improved lighting performance zms has described, why would anyone want to go back to stock? It's hard for me to tell, but they don't look significantly different from the stock lights.

If you want those funny collector plates you probably would have to back to stock - no?

That's what I thought, based on your pictures. So, again, why would anybody want to go back to stock?

Perhaps if one was to sell the car and wanted to keep the modified lights or is selling a stock unmodified car got the seller a better price?
